“Hey lets all go to Florida together for spring break, it’s our senior year and we have to end it with something fun!”, Phu whispers in biology class. Parker, Ethan, Hunter, John, and Toby all turned to me as if they already agreed with Phu. All I could think about was how much trouble me and boys would get me into. Sounded fun anyways. “Alright, we’ll head out friday after we get out of school”, I said. Phu looked at me and said “It’s a wrap!”. The only issue is convincing my parents to let me go with no parents supervision.…

This was the last day before spring break, the kids were so excited! It was the time for the kids to get all their spring cleaning done before the break. Each student cleaned out their mailbox and folders. Kids packed up their backpacks and threw out all their trash. My mentor teacher did take about 5 minutes to read to the children before they heading back outdoors. They did do some language art work, such as their print blogs. My mentor teacher told me of the idea and how it has helped the children learn to form more complex sentences. I was able to look at the children blog form the beginning of the year and compare it to their blog they were making today. The kids really approved and was amazing to see how far they had come. I spent the…

At the end of July, I considered giving up on writing again. With all the hours I poured into my last essay, it felt like a slap in the face that they didn’t even send a “thank you for trying” letter. I spent the announcement day sitting on my in-law’s porch sipping coffee with Baileys and stewing over yet another essay contest loss. Lacking in ideas of where I went wrong, I tried imitating old photos of authors again for inspiration. Leaning on the arm of the wicker chair with my chin resting on curled fingers; I held my pen like a cigarette, hoping to channel the inventiveness of Orwell or Fleming.…

Summer wasn’t always for fun, most of the time we ended up doing chores for him or remodeling something. Everything had to be just right. One time we poured a side walk for him. It took us about six hours to get it ready and poured. When he came out to inspect it he didn’t like it, “Tear it out and start over” he said, “It’s too thin”. Each of us was staring at each other with blank expressions on our faces. No one ever doubted Grandpa; you just did what he said. Another chore we did every summer was painting…
