Personal Narrative: My Trip To Jamaica
It was on this hot, cloudy day when I met a boy named Bryan who was down in Jamaica for vacation just like me. We both had a lot of things in common and became friends real quick. After playing around the beach for a few hours we both got really bored, so we decided to go on a little adventure out at sea. He brought with him a blow up raft that three people can fit on that can float out in the ocean. So we started pumping air into the raft and then put it out to sea with both of us on it. We wanted to see how far we can make it out far away from the small little bay we were chilling at. While we were heading out into the middle of nowhere, bryan brought we him a little paddle that can move the raft a little bit faster. The water was now deep

I went to a busy restaurant called JJ Chagos. The first person I chose was a younger lady with short brown hair. She was wearing a light maroon blouse with a grey cardigan and black leggings with flats; she also had her nails done. She had a coffee and ate a croissant very lady like. I classified her as a lower upper or upper middle class person. The second person I chose was a younger man with short brown hair. He was wearing a FSU sweatshirt, blue jeans, and Nike shoes. He was drinking a water and eating scrambled eggs and a bagel. I classified him as a middle class person. The third person I chose was an older man with a bald head and a huge beard. He was wearing glasses, a black t-shirt, and blue jeans. He had a big belly and a tattoo…

I never realized how lucky I was to be granted such a stupendous life until I saw the poverty some people live in. Over the summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to take an ephemeral trip to Nassau, Bahamas. It was much different than I imagined it would be. I remember walking around and almost being frighten to leave my parents sides. There were natives on every street corner trying to con their way into you spending money on their fake product; there were people going through the trash looking for food; there were people sitting on the street with all their belongings tied up to their bicycle street. You could just tell this country was nowhere near as advanced as the United States. It was nothing like the pictures and it got me thinking of the gloomy lives these children will have to grow up in and all the opportunities that they don't have available here.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

When I first heard of this opportunity, I became very ecstatic. As an avid New York Times reader, the opportunity to work with the paper itself was exciting. I love to write and find myself always writing on my blog or my journal, expressing my story and my voice. I want to express my unique voice as Laissa Alexis, the uniqueness of the experiences I have been through. My life as a Haitian immigrant, living in New Jersey and going to an all-girls Catholic school in an urban area. I would be able to express a narrative that is not often heard. I view the world in different lenses and I would love to share with the…

Weather destruction hits hard some places more then others around the world. In Alpena where I live we rarely have any kind of major weather damage. On June 14, a group of 44 members from Grace Lutheran Church, as well as other churches in Alpena, drove 20 hours to Mayflower, Arkansas where a level 5 tornado had hit. I was one of these, along with my mom and one of my best friends Maddy. For six months we had prepared and fundraised. I did not want to go on this trip, but what I was going to see was much more than what I had imagined--i came back more grateful for the life I have and more aware of the problems that other people deal with.…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…

I met my best friend Sally George at Novi High School, she was new to our campus at the time following her siblings that moved from Jordan in the Middle East. Knowing I believed at the time that all those in the Middle East were Muslim I assumed she was as well. I talked to her one day after school while working on our pottery projects I asked her about life in Jordan, she goes on discussing the various aspects and she had mentioned an embellished Catholic Church she grew up in was taken over during the chaos in Jordan. I was honestly confused because of my lack of knowledge on that area, and she ended up giving me a dirty look and a whole speech about there’s more than what the media portrays. After that experience with my good friend I have…

The beach was a pretty little one. It was rightly called Woody Bay and was tucked away in a little corner of North Devon. I had spent my holidays finding secret rock pools and caves in the jagged rocks sticking out of the sand. This time, however, I seemed to have explored the entire beach and was open to the wide world beyond the waves that splashed my feet. The dinghy was bright yellow, and about the size of a large dinner table. My dad had specially bought it blown up from the beach shop so we could go for a row on that day. Dad just dropped it on the shore and beckoned to me. I looked at him uncertainly and he just smiled, as if I should trust him with my life while he led me away on this tiny rubber dinghy. I edged forward and he told me I was totally safe, that hed had practice rowing before. Im not sure if I believed him at the time but I was old enough to know that he was my dad,…

We split up into small groups and did our different things. I was walking around with my best friend, Taylor. We went and rode the Vortex, which was the first time that I had rode it since the last year of going with the class.…
