Van Chester Thompkins was charged with multiple charges. He moved to suppress his statements made during the interrogation. He was found guilty on all charges by a jury of his peers and sentenced to life in prison without parole. His appellate counsel filed a motion for a new trial which was rejected by the trial court. He appealed the ruling to the Michigan Court of Appeals and the trial courts original refusal to suppress his pre-trial statements made during interrogation claiming his Miranda rights were violated. His claims were rejected ruling that he failed to invoke his right to remain silent therefore he waived it. He then filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan; they also rejected his claim and upheld the previous court rulings. However, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed the previous rulings for Thompkins regarding the Miranda claim. The court believed that the state court did not reasonably apply clearly established…
Stargirl and Leo have had an impact and everyone in Mica High. In fact I often found myself comparing myself to Leo. Leo is not afraid to be himself. They both have very out going personalities. In this essay I am going to compare myself to Leo to see how we relate, how we are different and how our personalities have changed throughout the book and my life.…
Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…
I went to St. Michael School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade, so when it came time to leave for high school, I was not excited for the change. St. Michael was especially small in regards to student population. We had just under three hundred students split between all nine grades. That left roughly twenty to thirty kids per class. I was extremely used too this small environment and not exactly looking forward to the terrors of high school towering over me nor the thought of being lost in the sea of students. Over the years I was extremely imbedded in my academics. I had straight A’s for my entire time at St. Michael. I received the academic achievement award at Eighth grade promotion for having the highest GPA in my class. Despite this, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to live up…
Stargirl is the embodiment of nonconformity, she cheers for both teams in sports, she carries a rat around school, serenades students with her ukulele at lunch, and she is kind to everyone. When Stargirl enters public high school at Mica High, she inspires a change in the unremarkable student body. She gives the students individuality and school pride. The students adapt so strongly to their new identities and school pride that Stargirl becomes an outcast. Leo Borlock however, is swept off his feet by her, so in order to allow his new love to be accepted her tells her to become ordinary. However, being ordinary does not work, so Stargirl hopes to rally the school behind her by winning the public speaking championships. This too does not work,…
Williams Elementary School is located just off of interstate 75 and home of the mighty Eagles. From the outside it has the appearance of a typical school with screaming students, rushing parents, and screeching buses. It is made out of boring brown bricks and beige stucco boarding near the top of the building. The inside features a prison-like setup, only with more vibrant colors. There is a double door leading into an office with multiple faculty and staff. In order to actually enter the school, you have to be buzzed in by the round and hyper man at the main desk. Once in the building, you will see that it is shaped like a large square with hallways extending from four sides. The hallways are full of colorful painting of eagles, laminated…
Growing up my mom has always encouraged my siblings and I to continue our education to as far as college. My mother never really got the chance to attend college because her family could not afford to put all their kids in school. She had seven siblings and an extra bill for school was not something her parents were able to afford. I consider myself really lucky to be alive in a time where there are so many opportunities to be able to afford college. If it were not for scholarships and financial aid, my mother’s story would be repeated once again. Through financial aid, the door for a college career is opened for me and I’m willing to enter it. My biggest motivator to push myself academically has been my…
When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…
Stargirl conforms by being on the hot seat and taking it literally and she became a cheerleader. The reason Stargirl was on the hot seat was to become popular because that is where every popular person goes. She became a cheerleader to make friends and to do what normal girls do for the most part.…
When I entered Havre Middle School I changed In many and numerous ways. When all people enter middle school they change, such as maturity, puberty and how they dress. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”…
Claire Standish is introduced as one of the popular, good-looking girls in the school. She is not a very smart student and, therefore concerns herself mostly with holding a place in the "in" crowd. This self-image that she creates, that she must look and act cool at all times, gives her the attitude and manner of someone who is very stuck-up. She generally stays in the attitude that she is more important than the other four who are in detention with her (Andy, Allison, John and Brian). She seems to be moving towards the idea that it is possible to have whatever kind of friends she could want at school until it comes her time to speak in the circle. She is asked by Brian if the five of them would still be together come Monday morning. Claire's responds, saying that, "Are we still friends, you mean? If we're friends now, that is? Do you want the truth? I don't think so." She believes her commitment to the "in" crowd to be more sacred than allowing who she could want as friends into her life. Yet after she brings this point up about how she can't leave her high place in school society, the others drill her with question after question about why not and why she can't handle the pressure of her popular…
All throughout school I strived to be a great student, always trying my best and never giving up. I didn’t really have any life changing moments that shaped me into who I am today that is, until freshman year. That year everything changed for me I was faced with challenges I never had to face before. My brother and I are three in a half years apart and he went to Horizon High School for his freshman and sophomore year. He was a troublemaker to say the least didn’t have the best reputation so all the teachers there thought that I was just like him. When I started there no one really knew my name and then once they saw my last name they started to be rude to me and say rude things to me. Even when I did good on work I still got a bad grade just because the…
As a girl growing up in Moreno Valley, California, it was not easy overcoming the challenges I faced. Being raised in the “worst part” of town, meant I was destined to be nothing in life. Though these are what the statistics told me, I believed otherwise. I attended the “ghetto” schools of the school district in Moreno Valley, but nothing came close to Moreno Valley High School.…
During my current four years of high school, I have come to a conclusion that life is hard and the decisions you make are very important. This is my last year of high school and I’m the first one to graduate from my family. My grandmother tends to tell me that I don’t need college just a simple 7 month course of medical assistant or dentist assistant and not waste any more money. I’m lost, I wish people could help me out and tried to guide me in the direction of the right decision but is my life and choices. There has been times that my grandmother has told me that I am not going to be somebody in the future.…
