Personal Narrative: My True Role In Special Education
As a paraprofessional myself, I find that I sometimes question what my true role is in a classroom. As much as I would like to modify some of the teachers’ teaching practices, I have to remember that I don’t have that authority. I have been a teacher assistant for 15 years; I have worked with general education students, special education students and from Pre Kinder to 12th grade. In every single general education classroom I’ve been in, the teacher would take over all forms of instruction and I simply helped with discipline. When I entered the special education classroom (current placement), I was given so much more responsibility. Not only am I expected to assist with discipline, completing assignments, but I am also expected to help

    However, paraprofessionals need to understand the distinction in teacher and paraprofessional roles. A paraprofessional should never develop IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals, make decisions about interventions, or deliver the main instruction without the supervision of a professional teacher. Alongside the professional teacher, paraprofessionals can take on teaching duties.
