During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. In fourth grade, I was given a homework assignment of the worst nature my nine-year-old brain could envision: an essay. My entire class erupted with sighs and groans as my teacher explained the assignment: interview someone you know and write a biography. I was stumped; I didn't think anyone in my family was interesting. I didn’t have an uncle that was a firefighter or cousin that was an astronaut. I had absolutely no idea who to write about. At dinner that night, my parents suggested I interview my grandfather. With no alternatives in mind, I unenthusiastically accepted their suggestion. Before this year I was always dead set on being a high school history teacher and thought that I never wanted to teach anything else. During the fall semester I was placed in a sixth grade class for my observation hours and at first I was kind of upset about it. My educational goals can be said to be broken down into three parts that are really the means to my ends which is the fourth and most important goal. My Socratic Seminar took place about a week ago on April 24. I always enjoy talking with my other English education majors because though we have lots of classes together we don’t often have many opportunities for open discussion between us. My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. 1) Zanna Prentiss was video recording students with her phone to post on her Snap Chat account. I kindly asked her to delete and not post the video. She then was being disrespectful for the rest of the meeting and towards the final minutes left the room with Katie Walkama.
