Personal Narrative: Obtaining My Degree
I use to think the most challenging goal that I had set for myself was obtaining my degree. I have discovered that writing an essay about oneself has been extremely difficult. I am a very private individual. So writing this essay is very uncomfortable to me because I have to discuss me and it is not on my terms.
It was the summer of spring of 1987; I remember having my parents sit on my bed and telling them about my plans for college. I was their first born and the first to go to college. Neither of my parents had gone to college. I was gone for two years and came home for a family emergency.
As the old saying goes life happens. I now have a son attending college himself. Through the years he has watched and sometimes attended class

I made some tough decisions in the last couple of years. I decided to make a career change after being with a company for over eighteen years. The career change also affected me financially. I sat down and created a plan for myself. I was going to finish school before my son. Who finished first he did? He graduated May 2016 and I graduated in August 2016. I have the bragging rights because I finished with a higher grade point average.
I completed my Bachelor?s Degree at Bethel University. I had the pleasure of walking and trying to hold back the tears and have my parents watch me as I walked up those steps to receive my diploma. Earning my degree was always important to me. Although I had accomplished a number of things in my life I still had a void. That void would never be fulfilled until I had accomplished the goal of earning a degree. It has taken me over twenty years to finally achieve my

Outside of my professional interests, I pride myself on being a compassionate young man; therefore, by finding a career in my field of choice, I hope to be able to innovate ways to provide a stable house and home for those who cannot provide it for themselves.…

When first posed the questions of how do I fit in at a college and how my extracurricular activities and experiences would benefit the college, I was not sure where to begin writing. To be perfectly honest, I think I would be a good fit on almost any campus because I believe I am adaptable to my surroundings and have a solid foundation that would make me an asset anywhere in the nation. While the previous sentence may come across to readers as egocentric or egotistic, I’m puzzled at where to begin because I also don’t think I’m outstanding anywhere compared to my fellow students academically speaking. On the other hand, it is almost a forgone conclusion in my mind that I have experienced more in my years than the majority of my peers. Also, as a result of many of these experiences, I’ve been able to get a jump start in my field of choice compared to where anyone else in the nation going into my career would likely be. Overall, I would say I have…

I would like to transfer once I get my associate degree at a community college because I feel I am ready to move forward with my education. I currently am enrolled at Cabrillo Community College, which is, for the most part, a transfer prep college. Community College has prepared me to study at a University and I hope to continue my studies as far as I can go. As I grew up, I was interested in a wide range of subjects and never found one thing I was truly passionate about. When I started at community college, I was set on a computer science major because I knew I was computer proficient and enjoyed spending my free time figuring out programs. I struggled a great deal in the major. As I realized that I was not passionate about programming, I…

One day, while I was laying peacefully on my bed, my mother came in with a letter from Florida A&M University. I didn't really want to speculate anything because a few days before I received a letter from another college saying that I wasn't accepted. Nevertheless I was still excited when I opened it and even more so when I read that I had been accepted. So without much hesitation I packed up and headed to Tallahassee. When I arrived my mother and I took care of registration and a plethora of things you have to manage as a new student. After all the hassles of college registration were completed my mother departed for home and I was left by myself to attend college. What a great feeling! Little did I know what I had on store for the next day, my first in college.…

It was the morning of move in day. I said goodbye to my home and headed out. I passed the local shopping market and my high school where I enjoyed a fun four years. As I headed to Norman I realized I was leaving everything I had ever known. All my life has consisted of living in the same house, going to school with the same kids, and going to the same supermarkets and restaurants. While I’d like to say I have developed a good idea of the world around me by visiting so many cities around the United States, in reality the only world I’ve ever known is the same one I have spent my whole life in. I have loved growing up in Northwest Oklahoma City with the friends that have helped shaped me into who I am today, however I relished the opportunity…

My educational career from my freshman year at Saint Louis University High School although with some difficulties has in my opinion been a great success when I look back on it. In my freshman year, I was really challenged academically by my classes but managed to push on with the help of my teachers and friends who knew I could succeed if given some help. My sophomore year was a bit easier now that I had adjusted to the normal homework, I still had a tough time but found a love for my history and English classes, I also found myself becoming more sociable compared to my grade school years. My junior year was likely my hardest year but I believe I learned the most about what I wanted to do in regards to a college degree in my Psychology class.…

I was placed on Academic Probation after my freshmen spring semester, I went to College with a new set of freedom I never had before and did not know how to adjust to my new freedom well. I come from a very large blended family and my parents worked very hard to provide for all of us, my mom had worked multiple jobs and was trying to continue her education so she would leave for work very early and would come home very late. That left the cooking, cleaning and tending to my younger brother to me all while I was a high school student, working 2 jobs and playing softball. With all that being said when I got to college I did not focus on school because for the first time in 4 years all I had to worry about was me and that was a strange relief…

When I graduated high school I knew I was going to attend college. It wasn’t a question. It was instilled in me as a child that I would be the only one of my siblings to go to school. My brothers would be forced into the military. It was never a desire of mine to attend college. It was more like the expected next step. Needless to say my passion for school was null and void. I attribute my academic standing to this fact. Maybe if I'd thought about what I wanted to do with my life versus just going with what was expected I would've done a little better.…

By being the first generation to attend college, I broke the educational barrier that bounded my family within its domains. Both of my parents are from Mexico, coming from non-educated, hardworking families. My father along with my mother, came to the United States with nothing but the clothes on their backs, a dream in their sights and the will and determination to help them reach their goals. If I have learned anything from my parents, it is that hard work and the right mentality can go a long way. I want to show my parents that their sacrifices that they have made for my brothers, sister and I will not be in vain, because I will show them that we have the ability to achieve great things in life. Being the first to attend college is something I hold dear, but I feel that graduating from a well-known university with a bachelors in engineering, is my goal and my responsibility. I aspire to be a role model for my two younger brothers and sister. I…

Deciding to go continue my education and further learning after high school was one of the best decisions I’ve made only because it’s what will benefit my future living, financially and mentally as well. Attending school has taught me useful tips I’ll use for the rest of my life, whether its time management, not procrastinating with anything and pushing myself to the highest possible limit. At the end of the day college is not for everyone to attend, it isn’t something to not take seriously; it requires dedication, patience, social skills, etc. Although college is a privilege but I see it more as a necessity in life in order to expand your horizons and life’s possibilities.…
