Personal Narrative: Open Water Drowsy
Drowsy and distracted is a recipe for disaster when you are floating aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean. You are responsible for making sure you do not drift off into the endless void. I will admit that I sometimes find it hard to stay awake during an early morning class but that is nothing compared to the focus it takes to not nod off as the soothing swells rock your inner tube. My friend, Tiffany and I luckily had the foresight to tie our inner tubes together as to not stray from each other but had no plans for what to do if we strayed from all land in general. I can assure you rehearsing for a remake of Open Water was not a part of our original itinerary. We normally spend our beach trips in the downtown areas rather than beach itself so we made it our personal mission to spend more time in the ocean this year. It was going well up until that day. We had hauled our large, awkward inner tubes down to the scorching boardwalk and through the somehow even hotter sand. The chill of the water was a refreshing contrast to the over bearing ball of fire in the sky. We marched through the oncoming waves until we finally got beyond their breaking point, where the waves were nothing more than gentle swells. It seemed like the start of another perfect day at the beach. We bobbed cheerfully in our neon green inner tubes, burning through all our usual topics (hot guys we see, our plans for the day, etc.) in record time. Suddenly our high energy chatter became slower, our …show more content…
We may have failed our personal mission but that didn’t mean we didn’t enjoy ourselves. It was easily one of the best vacations I have ever been on. You can plan all you want and try to control all the details of your day but it is important to realize that your plans may not work out like you intended and sometimes going with the flow can be even more memorable especially when you are with your best

In Casual Water by Don Lee, the story addresses the many challenges that are faced when attempting to cope with loss, as well as demonstrating the subtle distinctions between abandonment and departure. Lee uses the Fenny family to represent the universal fears of isolation, abandonment, and regret that transpire within all of us. Lee begins the story with the image of a desolate and abandoned airstrip, only accessible by boat as “ the road bridge washed out by years of storms and erosion and neglect” (22). This airstrip is a metaphor for Brian, the younger brother who has weathered years of storms and neglect. He is only accessible through his boat, his lifeline to the world, his older brother Patrick. Yet like most boats, Patrick fears the idea of being tied down and yearns to venture out and explore, but his parents abandonment has already left Brian battered and worn down, with severe emotional issues. While Brian struggles to cope with the abandonment of his parents as well as the gradual loss of his brother, Davis and Patrick struggle to cope with the idea of abandoning their respective dreams, PGA golf and going to Annapolis, to stay home and raise Brian.…

In “This Is water” David Foster Wallace teaches us to be more compassionate rather than be self-center. Firstly, he mentions how education can help us to change our natural response by giving us the awareness about how to think and not what to think. Secondly, the choice of what to think about this idea consider that most of us are close-minded, unaware of how imprisoned we are to our own perception that continually shaping us which make us the center of our own universal. Furthermore, choosing on how to see and reason things can be the truth about the world around us rather than thinking the world revolves around us only. Finally, choosing on what to believe can either free or cage us when we set our mind towards it.…

As soon as I started reading, Reid was able to get my attention and engage me into his final chapters. Using the fictional examples of Wendy and Juanita I was able to get a better understanding of what many Americans go through when they don’t have access to insurance. Education, as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary, is stated as “[the] knowledge, skill, and understanding one acquires from attending a school, college, or university.” By definition of these terms, one first would think that true education is reading, writing, and math skills students are forced to endure for twelve plus years in cold metal desks. True education, though, is the ability to question, think, and be aware of one’s self and surroundings in order to develop skills to grow and prosper. Public education in its ongoing state interrupts this process. Granted that the majority of American youth is publicly educated, public schools are the backbone of the American citizen.…

July 8, 1982, I murdered my first victim. Her name was Wendy Lee Coffield. She was only 16, just a runaway, probably dropped out of school. I strangled it with it’s own clothes. I dumped the body in the Green River. Like my favored outdoor sexual spots, these were some of the locations I also dumped these objects, what I like to refer to these outcast women as. Also in the Green River was the body of Debra Lynn Bonner, 23, Marcia Faye Chapman, 31, Cynthia Jean Hinds, 17, Opal Charmaine Mills, 16, Tracy Winston, 19.…

It tasted like fishy beach. Texture-wise, it was firm, it wasn’t too bad, but it tasted like beach. A better way to explain is, when you pick up an old seashell at the beach, and you smell something inside it living. You might think it was a Hermit Crab or something, but it might have been a sushi. After I ate the first one, I couldn’t eat the second one; my parents looked at me as if I was crazy, but it was actually that terrible. When I slid the plate over to my father, he gave my mom and my sister the same exact look.…

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…
