Personal Narrative: Overcoming The Challenges Of Doing Homework
At the age of 8 I knew that my parents didn’t have a higher education, which they are not at fault, but it did create some challenges for me when it came to doing my homework. For example, when I was in the third grade, I would ask my mother or father for help on my homework, but it resulted in them being too tired from work or not understanding the content. Realizing this problem was disheartening because that meant that I couldn’t rely on my parents for homework help. Therefore, in order to overcome this obstacle I had to self teach myself to do my homework by myself. For example, the steps that I took when I had to self teach myself is by first paying attention in class every day and I made sure that I didn’t miss any school days unless

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

In fourth grade, I was given a homework assignment of the worst nature my nine-year-old brain could envision: an essay. My entire class erupted with sighs and groans as my teacher explained the assignment: interview someone you know and write a biography. I was stumped; I didn't think anyone in my family was interesting. I didn’t have an uncle that was a firefighter or cousin that was an astronaut. I had absolutely no idea who to write about. At dinner that night, my parents suggested I interview my grandfather. With no alternatives in mind, I unenthusiastically accepted their suggestion. The following Friday night, my parents drove me to my grandparents’ house with a pencil and a notebook, and I sat down with my grandfather as he told me the story of how he came to America.…

Therese Sorey, the Irvine Teachers Association president, claims that parents should help their children and says, “By being involved, parents can demonstrate to their kids that school is important, that they want their kids to achieve, that the recognize learning is difficult, and that sometimes they can help” (para 4). The point Sorey is trying to make is that by parents helping their children, that will show the child that their loved ones understand their dilemma. It also portrays that by helping them, and teaching them what to do, children will be inspired to do better. However, there is a negative effect by parents helping their kids with their homework;“When they [students] go to college they need to know how to study and problem-solve on their own, and their parent won’t be there to help them” (Christina Sotelo Benson, para 5). The point being made here is that if children recieve an ample amount of help from their parents, the students may not be able to easily do their homework in the future. Homework is given by teachers to provide as preparation for high school and college. To sum up, parents should not interfere with their child’s homework because it will later lead to a lack of…

A major theme in my life is improvement. I challenge myself to take risks and set high expectations for myself. For instance, I strive to run faster and for longer distances every couple of times I approach the treadmill belt. I am obstinate about my minimum distance, 2.2 miles, and my minimum speed, 6.8. A major component of improving myself is learning. Every new word is a miniscule enhancement of my massive English vocabulary pool, but it is still a step in the right direction. I enjoy becoming more knowledgeable in both domestic and international affairs. I wish I could have more time to pour into reading current event and health articles. I am particularly attached to drumming the latest scientific discovery or innovate biotechnology product…

My educational goals can be said to be broken down into three parts that are really the means to my ends which is the fourth and most important goal. First, Im working on getting good grades in every class, I want to work on having and maintaining a high competitive GPA. My second goal is to get my Bachelors in Political Science in an ideal time frame of two more years. My third goal and one that is out of my hands, one may say, is getting a scholarship. I know there is a large amount of competitive students in the school, who are well deserving of scholarships but I need this scholarship to alleviate my parents from their stress and hard work to keep up with my payments. The last and really my main goal, where my eyes are set and where I,…

My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

The final step used in creative problem solving is refining solutions. According to Vincent R. Ruggiero, the three steps to follow are to work out details by determining exactly how solutions will be applied. The next step is to examine each detail for imperfections, and the last step is to make any improvements that will eliminate the imperfections. When the thinker reaches a solution to a problem, and has worked through the deficiencies, the creative thinker must work through any issues to find how the solution affects others.…

As I type this essay, I am listening to the playlist that I would put on shuffle every time I put my headphones on for roughly one and a half years. I am listening to this playlist in order to help me express the feelings I had felt during one of the toughest times of my life. The playlist consists of a variety songs about heartbreak, wishful thinking, dying dreams, the kind of music you would listen to after a breakup. Because that is what this felt like- a breakup. This was not a mutual breakup though, as I did not want the split from this sport to happen. The sport that I was infatuated with was running. It was my way of escaping the stresses of life. When I was told on April 10th, 2017 that I would have to part from running, my heart shattered.…

One hundred and fifteen feet in the air, all I could do was dangle. Lying on my stomach strapped in by only a harness and a belt, I watched as the ground slipped farther and farther away from me. I had been preparing for this for almost over an hour. With my father beside me, we braced ourselves for the drop. The Superman was supposed to be as fast as a rocket and was supposed to leave a heroic feeling pulsing through your veins.…
