Personal Narrative: Pow
Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my

As someone who has lived in Cumberland House, Saskatchewan and Terrace, British Columbia, this wasn't my first Pow Wow. I will say I don't remember going to any in Cumberland House as I was only two when we lived there, but I there are quite a few funny pictures of me, a chubby blond haired blue eyed baby in my pink jacket sitting among all the brown skinned, brown eyed, and black haired Native babies. I do however remember going to Pow Wows in Terrace. These two places are very different from each other, the Costal peoples having very different traditions from the Plains peoples.…

On Saturday, I have attended a Pow Wow that was happening at the California State University of Long Beach. I knew what kind of event it was because this was my second time attending one. At the first Pow Wow, I was able to take the opportunity to volunteer for them and helped them out with the resting area for the dancers and other miscellaneous tasks. I also had the chance to walk around and explore what was provided and stayed at the event until the end. It has been over two years since I had gone to the first Pow Wow so I was excited to see once again the beauty and the uniqueness of the Native Americans and their culture.…

Hi Amber, great to "see" you in another class! Thank you and your family for the years of service. The military life has its own culture, but as you have mentioned the frequent moves allow you to experience numerous geographical locations and their cultures. My grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island from Scotland and I have been fortunate to visit where they lived several times.…

POW! Right smack in my forehead leaving a dent and a gash right in my skull. The metal baseball bat swooped around and made hard contact with my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old I was playing in the yard. My brother (who had more brains than I have had) purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me while he was swinging. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was so intrigued by that darn bat and ball going over the house I just had to get a closer look. I started wandering over to him, like how not knowing little kids do. Well, as fate would have it, Nick ran into me. The momentum he had on impact, caused me to fall forward, right into a brick wall. I remember the pain running through my arms and face, but nothing hurt as badly as my lip. My first grade teacher came out, and she helped me to the nurse. The nurse called my mother, and told her that I had to go to the hospital. Before my mother got to the school, although she was driving pretty fast, I got to look in the mirror. My upper lip was split open, and did not look pretty. It was bleeding excessively when my mother got to the school. She quickly got me into the car, and we drove off.…

My family and I hear banging and yelling at our door as we know who are visitors are, the Nazi’s. We are violently being pushed around as the soldiers yell into our ears making me feel almost deaf. I’m pushed away from my family as I see their faces of fear. I can see children crying and begging to soldiers for their parents as parents yelled and screamed back. We are taken to the camps that will be our new home for now. I finally get to meet up with my mother again as she puts her hands on my face. I hug my mother as we then are taken to get our new looks. My mother and I are taken to get our new clothing. Then they shove us to get our hair shaved off. A buzzer turns on and soon we are shaved. It’s so hard for me to look at my mother cry…

I was playing baseball in the spring of my junior year at Athens High School. It was a big game for the team. If we won, we still could make the playoffs, but if we lost, our playoffs hopes crushed. I was in the starting lineup playing first base and batting sixth. It was the third inning and it was still a tied game at zero. Muscle Shoals had a runner on second base with one out. The Muscle Shoals batter hit the ball to third base; our third baseman fielded the ball and threw the ball towards me at first. The ball was thrown off line up into the baseline. I stretch trying to keep my foot on the bag and make the catch. As soon as I caught the ball the hitter collided with me. The collision sent the ball and my glove soaring into right field.…

Growing up I would always listen to my dad speak of his war stories, but I never fully grasped the meaning of what it all meant. As I got older, I was able to understand his words about his time in the Vietnam War, from near death experiences to his most thrilling moments of life. My dad always follows up his life experiences and adventures with “But you have to do well in school, go to college, and get a good job, because unfortunately I was unable to.” Following the war, my dad and his family moved to California and he was thrust into work as a manicurist. Being that young men were forced into recruitment during the war- my dad, a college student at the time, was enlisted into the South Vietnam army and thus was unable to finish college.…

In 2004 at the young age of 19 I found myself in a new place, a new world that I had never seen before. I joined the Marines out of High School to see the world and learn about other people. What I learned in the military I have applied it to my daily life. I learned to never judge someone by what they look like or how they live. Just because it is new to you or different dose not mean it is wrong.…

Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. My mother just gave birth to my little brother when I started noticing the financial issues my family were facing. As a little girl, I do not know how our finances worked all I knew was many bills were due and I knew it because when I was a little girl I liked to practice reading and those bill statements were the papers that attracted my interest due to its colorful paper.…

I consider myself someone who is a people person. I have always enjoyed interacting and working with others as opposed to working on a task by myself. My experiences have taught me that it has always been in situations that involve team dynamics or social interactions (starting in high school as rugby captain) that I have thrived both as a leader and as a firm contributor towards a common goal. I start off with this point because to me it seems that one must have the ability to lead others and to both understand and interact with the varying personalities and temperaments of people in order to enter into such a profession as dentistry. Furthermore, I feel as though I have been trying to mold such attributes through my experiences with my fraternity,…
