Personal Narrative: Pursuing A Career In Clinical Psychology
I am not entirely sure of what career I will end up in, but I know I’d like to do something where I can help others. A career in psychology is a great option for me, and something I am certainly interested in. I would really enjoy working as a clinical psychologist because I am intrigued both by the study of mental illness as well as the work of treating it through counseling. I have personally struggled with my mental state and gone through counseling and realized how important these resources are to those who are struggling. I would specifically like to work with children, because many adults don’t seem to understand that simply because we are young, we cannot also struggle inside. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

While visiting the College Foundation of North Carolina website I was not surprised in my answers. My Holland code was CES, meaning conventional, enterprising, an social. Also, I was able to find out my work values and they are achievement, recognition, and relationships. However, I do feel like there were more on the list that I felt were also part of my work values. I definitely feel like these relate to my degree and also my professional career. It would be very beneficial because while getting my associate and bachelor degree and then leading to my career as an Occupational Therapist it will become very helpful by being organized, working with people and helping others. There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Substance abuse counselors are important because if you or someone you know is addicted to something they can get help from someone in this field. When I was asked to interview a Psychology Professor in order to get to know the Psychology Department better, and to broaden my knowledge in the field of Psychology, I was very excited. My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…
