Personal Narrative-Sahib Meet Of Champions
It was a scorching hot October day in Palatine, Illinois. As my team and I warmed up for our cross country race we could feel the sun fry us. The Palatine Meet of Champions is always a competitive meet and this was the last time I would toe the line there. I was nervous. Thoughts started rushing through my head and I tried to stay calm. As the day went on, it was time to go to the line and start the race. Right before the gun went off;, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I visualized success. The gun went off and I bolted for the bottleneck. As we came to the last mile, I was in great position. I started making my way to the front and I felt like I was flying. Although I did not win, I placed fifth against many nationally ranked runners. I felt like I was on top of the world. At that moment I knew I wanted to pursue the dream of running collegiately. Later that week, I received a call from Coach Chorny from Miami University telling me that he would like me to run as a RedHawk. I was hooked after my official visit and later that month, I signed my letter of intent. My journey was set to continue. Before coming to …show more content…
We got together and told us that even though we did not place as we would have liked to, we still accomplished so much that year. We ran as a team and had good showings at meets throughout the whole year. He told us that it is silly to say a season is a failure because of one bad race, because we had come so far from the beginning of the season. We grew as a team and had fun doing it, and that is something that we he told us to be proud of because not all high school teams could say that. Coach Ernst always knew the right thing to say to me to cheer me up and get me fired up and pushed me to my best. He also challenged me to think differently and be proud of my accomplishments even though they may not be what I expected them to

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

It was a dreadful cold fall morning on November 7th and I was getting ready to board the bus for a state football game against the Becker Bulldogs. The police escorted us to Saint Cloud State under a lot of care. Even though I was a freshman and didn’t play much varsity, I was getting…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

I attempted to run longer before I stopped and began walking. I paced myself and even endeavored to keep up with some of the faster people on the team. Gradually, week after week, I could see myself progressing from a time in the mid-forties, to the low-forties, and finally into the thirties range. Between the first meet and regionals, we had about six more races, and regrettably, I came in last place in three of them. However, I refused to let my losses stand in the way of my motivation to get better. I kept training and before I knew it, it was the day of the regional…

My last event was the 200 meter dash and as I got set in my blocks my heart pounded. I was beyond nervous but I knew I had a point to prove. The race started and as I was running the only thing on my mind was crossing the finish line with a new and improved personal record. As I finished, I was out of breath and everything seemed blurry but all I could hear was my coach screaming in excitement. I heard him yell at the top of his lungs, “PR, You did it! I knew you could do it!” The entire night I thought back on my past and could not believe I had just ran the best time I ever had in four…

The bus ride to Muscle Shoals High School felt like hours and hours while only minutes had passed. My stomach flipped ferociously like a gymnast on the vault. My friends were trying to hype me up, but I could only focus on the fear and shaking of my body. I was too afraid to move, but too prideful to act as though I was as nervous as I was. As my legs carried me onto the huge field where vibrant reds and blacks were flaunted over the walls and seats, I observed the very place I would spill all my hardwork and dedication and I began to grow anxious. “Just breathe” I told myself over and over and over. I was so busy arguing with myself that I barely noticed the loudspeaker singing my name. I walked to the field and slowly crouched like a lioness hunting her prey. POW. The gun went off and everything became normal to me. Running had become like breathing or eating or sleeping. I no longer feared the idea of failure, but yet embraced the idea of succeeding. I bolted across the finish line with many seconds between me and my opponents. Not only did I win the war within myself, but I helped my team win the entire meet. Everyone can win their battles, you just have to have the will and determination to do…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

When I moved from the eastside to the westside of Dearborn in 2006, I felt distraught. I barely knew anyone that went to Bryant Middle School. I wanted to return home and talk to my friends that went to Woodworth Middle School, in East Dearborn. To comfort me with a pet, my brothers took me along with them to the Dearborn Animal Shelter. We combed through several cages containing cats; we saw an adorable three-legged cat, a beautiful calico cat, and some cute white kittens. We then came upon a cage containing a small white and black cat named Ring Leader. Ring Leader was 5 months old at the time. He was lightly shedding, climbing over the shelter worker, and feverishly looking around. Ring Leader seemed like an energetic and fun cat, so I chose…

When I stood at the bottom I did not think I could make it. half way up, I knew that I could not make it. Now, standing at the top, I look behind me at the amazing challenge that I have just conquered. Not only is the hill at Eau Claire an infamous feat that every student must traverse, but it is also a metaphor for every hardship that has entered into my life. One hardship I have faced, was my sports injuries during high school. My junior year track season started off being the best experience i’ve had. Unfortunately, this time was cut short. I ripped a ligament in my leg ending my entire spring season. I was angry at the world asking, “why me”. However, I knew I still had a team depending on me. Day in, and day out, I would show up to practice…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. In the Summer of 2017, I received a phone call that was full of excitement. Up to this point it was high school baseball season and I was playing baseball for Senior. Baseball is my favorite sport, so I dedicate a lot of time practicing and working out to get ready for the season. It was midway through the season when the big doubleheader with our crosstown rival Hempstead, approached. We ended up sweeping the mustangs which gave us the outright of the city championship. I went 4-6 at the plate, with four RBI's and my first career home run. The following weekend, my coach had told me that I had won TH Athlete of the Week and that I was going to be receiving a phone call. My phone finally started ringing and I quickly picked it. "Hello," I said…
