Say It Isn’t So
A week passed by in no time and I felt worn out. For the past seven days, my mornings and afternoons were consumed with Johaly and wedding stuff. I was sick and tired of talking about flowers, dresses, jewelry, makeup, and hairstyles. I didn’t dare tell Johaly that because I told her that I was going to be here for her. If that wasn’t bad enough, my nights and early mornings were filled with flashing lights, strippers, alcohol, and clubbing with Shay. Her schedule was jammed packed with deejaying gigs, and she was raking in the dough. She’d made over seven thousand dollars, and that wasn’t including all the free drinks and tips she’d received.
Tonight was the night for a break. I’d been drinking way too much, and I felt

Please don’t tell me that he lives across the street.”
“They call him Roz. He doesn’t live across the street. That’s his aunt’s house. She just moved there a few weeks ago.”
Imani looked like she wanted to cry. I knew that she had to be humiliated because I was.
“Last year it was weed. This year it’s sex. I don’t know what I’m going to do with you. I should tell your dad because you are getting out of control.”
She looked at me with a dumb expression on her face, and I told her to change her sheets because her room smelled like sex. Before I could ask her another question, she was already gone. I knew that she was probably taking the sheets off of her bed, and I was correct. I entered her room slowly and folded my arms across my chest. When I leaned back against the wall, she stopped what she was doing and sat on the bare mattress.
She and I both stared at the pile of soiled linen on the floor until I broke the silence.
“So, is he the only one that you’ve been having sex with?” She didn’t say a word and continued to stare at the pile of sheets. “So I guess that’s a no,” I said before I sat down on the bed next to her. “Are you using any birth control?”
“Yeah, but no one knows. I went to the free clinic and told them that I wanted birth

“Get up from there. You better get ready because we’re going to talk to my mother tonight. I’m positive that she won’t tell Lester.” After the confirmation, Imani sat up and asked, “Are you 1000% sure? And I’m not talking about the 1000% sure like those girls do on the Maury show.” I laughed and extended my arm to help her up from the floor. When she took my hand, she said, “Summer, thanks for breaking it all down for me. I never looked at things like that.”
I only had a chance to nod before she gave me a hug and told me she loved me. I took that as my cue to exit because I wasn’t going to help her clean up this messy room. Out in the hallway, I told her about the food that I’d purchased for us. Before I could make it down the hall, Imani rushed by me with her dirty laundry. After she had started the load, she washed her hands and joined me in the kitchen to eat. “So how are we going to bring this up to your mom?”
“Don’t worry. I’ll figure something out. Until then, you need to set a timer or something, so you can remember to take that pill. You also need to stop having unprotected sex. Nah, scratch that. You need to stop having

Armin, Jordan, and I walked in the front door. It was packed as it usually is on a Saturday night. All the tables were filled with people laughing and carrying on. My mom’s words really meant a lot to me, but I didn’t have time to thank her for them because the announcer was announcing the final couple of the night. I gave her a quick hug and went to meet Macy. She looked even more beautiful than she had in the store and I couldn’t think of any girl I would rather be with at that moment. We complemented each other perfectly, in looks and personalities. Macy was the only girl for me and it was pretty clear I was the only man she needed as well. We met at the top of the stairs and quickly whispered an “I love you” as the announcer began talking about our lives. By the time the announcer had finished I didn’t want it to be over, but I knew the night could only get…

Nearly half of the pregnancies in the United States are unintended. Births resulting from unplanned pregnancies can have significant, negative consequences for women, their families, and society as a whole. Effective birth control methods are expensive, thus, a significant number of women in low-income households do not use them. A variety of birth control methods should be free for females above the age defined by each state as the legal age of consent, because it improves the lives of women, kids, and society.…

"Hey Penny, how'd you get here, all of us are telling our experiences of how we ended up here.” Baby B asked me, “you haven’t said a peep, you usually talk in every conversation we have.” Baby B’s real name was Bailey; we called her Baby B because she had that baby face. She also got those big brown eyes just like her mother. “It’s a long story; I might not even finish telling you the story today.” Baby B gave me that look she gave when she wanted something really badly. “Fine,” I said, “but don’t blame me if we be sleeping late.” Everybody gathered around me like if I were telling them a bedtime story.…

Breakfast with the family was a Sunday morning routine. As we gathered around the table the food was soon forgotten as final details were organized and final promises were made. Kenza and I went back to the bedroom afterwards, to re-pack her bag, wishing all the while that this day wasn't happening. We spent the afternoon together, doing what we do best, watching "Friends," laughing, conversing in languages only we can understand. The afternoon was interrupted by the arrival of her current boyfriend, and as they shared their final moments alone, realization crept under the front door, and the house grew quiet.…

I was thinking about everything that happened last year and I thought about when my sister got married. I personally hated her fiancé; well actually I've always loathed that word fiancé. It makes me think of size eight posh spice look-alikes and huge diamond rings worth more than a small country. Courtney planned everything; she made me go over her hair do plans for me, my mother and the twenty-six bridesmaids! I remember in the car on the way home she planned the eight-layer cake and a full lilac colour scheme. The word boring came to mind when I started to drift into la la land. By the time I came back to the real world, Courtney had worked out all the hymns, seating arrangements and decided that she wanted pink sweets to be handed round for the guests to choke on. My sisters wedding had taken over eighteen months to plan, which made me think of what my wedding would be like or if I would remain permanently single.…
