Personal Narrative: Scoliosis
“When something bad happens you have three choices. You can either let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.” ~ Unknown
Let me take you through my journey on my diagnoses and what comes with it. Scoliosis is a disease that cannot be cured and anyone who has it will always have it. Scoliosis is the lateral curve of the spine which basically means your back is not straight and it goes sideways or in my case kinda like an s. I was first diagnosed with scoliosis when I started complaining to my mom and dad that my back was really starting to hurt before a big softball game. If anyone knows my dad he always tells me to suck it up and don't think about it. Which I did and I stuck with it until the game started. I was the pitcher for my softball team, this game was a big game for us

Myung. I did the same x-rays and everything but this time when she called me back she didn't have good news for me. She told me that I had curved even more and that my back was at a 53 and she wasn't below 50 or we have to have surgery on it. At this point my eyes were filled with tears I didn't want to have surgery causae that's a big deal to have surgery in general but especially on your back! We talked and talked and talked and she said everything was going to be alright and that a whole bunch of kids have gone through this same [process and she had a couple of kids she wanted me to talk to. Its great that she wanted me to talk to these kids because she said you gain friends from talking to them and the girls that she wanted me to talk to were in all the same sports as me. This made my heart feel warm because I trusted her. The surgery would take about 6 hours, i would be in the hospital for 3 days, I wouldn't be able to come to school for 2 weeks but when I do come back I am only allowed to go half days for about a month or more. I will be out of sports for about a year or whenever I am fully

Spina bifida occulta is the mildest and most common form of this disorder. It usually only involves a minor fault with one or two of the vertebrae and it usually shows no symptoms nor requires treatment. When an infant is born with spina bifida occulta, the skin is normal and covers the deformity of the spine. Spina bifida occulta literally means "a hidden spot on the spine," and for most people, this spot will remain hidden. It has been estimated that approximately 10 percent of the American population has spina bifida…

Life was going to dramatically change as the nurses rolled me into the operating room. Back surgery is an invasive operation as it is, but imagine it in the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl. The surgeons explained the procedure as a spinal fusion, with titanium rods placed along both sides of my spine for stability. This procedure would correct my scoliosis. Afterward, the pain was more than anyone should endure. I was not allowed to twist or bend, and I was unable to dress myself, or leave the house alone. This was difficult to accept, as I didn’t want to become dependent upon others.…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…

Depending on the severity scoliosis can be disfiguring and limit the function of the lungs and upper limbs. However, there is a major surgery to help straighten the spine.…

Scoliosis is defined as an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. It will cause either a C-shaped or S-shaped curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is a disease that attacks the muscles and ligaments of the spinal column causing a sideways twisting and rotation of the spine, ribs, and pelvis. There are many different branches of this disease, but the most common type is idiopathic scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is usually found in children between the ages of ten and twelve. Girls are more likely than boy to have this type of scoliosis. Treatment of scoliosis is based on the type of scoliosis, the person’s age, how much more the person is likely to grow, and the degree of the curve. Scoliosis can be viewed from two extremes; from harmless to horribly deforming.…
