Personal Narrative: Scuba Diving In Hawaii
Scuba Diving In Hawaii

I was always amazed and interested in the sea. I also like scuba diving with my dad and my older brother, Benjamin. The last time I went scuba diving was two years ago in French Polynesia. Now, I was going to dive in Hawaii! I saw things that I was totally not expecting to see.
We had gone on a vacation to Hawaii for the summer. Four days before we left Hawaii, my dad told me.“ I’m going scuba diving with your brother in two days, you want to come?”
I was so excited to go scuba diving again, and this time it was going to be two dives, not only one! I was happy to say,“Yes!” My dad called the store and told them that I was going diving with too. Unfortunately, my dad said that since I didn’t have the Open Water (Level of category for scuba diving) I had to do a couple of tests in the pool. I was fine with that as long as I could go scuba diving.
The next day I woke up at 6:30 a.m. I was so excited and stressed at the same time, but I knew that it was too late to go back. In the car, my dad reminded me everything.

Once we were at the bottom of the water I was so happy to finally see all those fishes and corals again. I checked if I had put everything correctly, once I did, we started to explore. First, we went towards an “underwater arch”, we saw tons of eels, they were swimming in between corals. When we went under the arch, there were some huge sea urchins along with beautiful starfishes. It was very cool being under the arch, there was even a little cave inside it, but it was too small to get in. When we got through the arch, I asked in “sign language” if we could go up on top of the arch. My instructor said ok. We found a little area with no coral that we could go on. Being on top was like being the king of the sea, you could see a lot from up there. I decided to “jump” off the arch. My dad was filming me with the GoPro, so I did it like if I was jumping off a diving

As I grew older, my interest in marine life also grew. While normal first graders were reading about princesses, I was reading about sharks or dolphins. My nose was always in a new book with some type of marine animal. For Christmas I was always asking for something to do with fish. I remember one day my grandma bought me a little stuffed hammerhead shark. I carried that…

First and foremost, In the 1940’s one of the first underwater devices was invented, the Aqualung. This idea was created by an underwater explorer named Jacques Cousteau. This invention was great for divers of all kinds because it lets you breathe underwater. So what exactly did it look like? An article called “Dive Technology” explains this, “The Aqualung was a metal oxygen tank attached to a breathing tube that controlled the flow of oxygen. It was strapped with a harness to a diver’s back.” The Aqualung was significant to underwater research.…

Being able to go on the Key Largo trip this year would be amazing! I remember hearing my cousins and even some friends that have gone in the past years talk about how much fun they had, and how it was a once in a lifetime experience. They told me that once the opportunity came around to take it, so I did. I can remember my first time ever snorkeling. I was six years old vacationing with my family in the Bahamas, Nassau to be exact. I can remember my sister and me holding hands, counting to three, jumping off the boat and into the water without a care in the world. It was so much fun free diving down to the reefs, but we weren’t allowed to touch anything or we would be in big trouble. They also gave us each a bag of food to feed the fish in hopes that they would get close to us. Once we were all in the boat one of the tour guides jumped in the water and brought a starfish and conch shell on board. At first he wouldn’t let me touch it because I pronounced the name wrong. The animals were returned safely to the water and placed back on the reefs. The next year’s vacation was the Dominican Republic. This was also the first time I went swimming with sharks and stingrays. The only thing I did not like about this trip was the fact that the sharks and sting rays were stuck in a cage. But it was also the first time I got to swim with dolphins in a controlled environment to ensure no harm to the animals or myself. The last vacation was snorkeling in Cancun Mexico. Even my grandma went on this trip with us. This was the last time I went snorkeling, other than in my pool, but it’s not the same experience. By going on this Key Largo trip I am hoping to relive and make some of my own memories my senior year. I am also looking forward to experimenting and observing all the different animals Marine Lab has to offer. Maybe I can also find a career in the marine biology field seeing…

As I stood on the board, I imagined myself soaring through the air, picturing every move I made until sliding into the water as perfectly as possible. I competed as a Springboard Diver for six years. Diving helped me discover and further explore the nature behind what motivates me and keeps me mental strong and capable, which is now an immense aspect of who I am. Although I am no longer a Springboard Diver, it still influences aspects of my everyday life. Diving is unique in how it is more mentally taxing than it is physically.…

So we decided to go find somewhere to park the boat for lunch. Eventually we found this really cool cave that had plenty of room to put the boat under, and we got out the sandwich stuff. It’s kind of a tradition we have to have sandwiches when we go boating or snowmobiling. So we got out the bread, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, meat, and pickles along with the fruit salad, and Powerades. After I had finished eating I got bored and decided to go for a swim, so I cannon balled in, and the water was even warmer inside of the cave! I just laid back on my lifejacket and floated, it was so…

I’m up for the rigorous classes and the challenge of Big Ten Diving because nothing, not even a disability, will get in my way of having success in both the classroom and on the diving boards while at the University of Michigan. Diving has taught me many things about life, and the most important ones are to face your fears instead of avoiding them, learn to advocate for yourself, and to work through your…

I have always loved going to the lake, but this time was a little bit different, we had a boat. It wasn’t a very big boat, but it was big enough to put a smile on my face. Not only did we have a boat, but we had a tube as well. Every other year I was told I wasn’t allowed to go in the tube; but after repetitive asking to ride in it my Dad finally said yes.…

It all started with this very simple question, “Do you want to move to Florida?” When my mom had asked that, we had just came back from our spring break vacation in Florida. We lived in Kentucky and my siblings and I went to St. Albert, I was in fifth grade. Of course when my mom said that my whole family thought it was a joke, so we all had said sure to the idea. About a week later, I forgot about the question, so after school one day my parents had told me and my siblings they had a surprise for us. Little did I know that we were actually moving to Florida.…

It's a busy place. There were many boats and ship going to different parts of the Reef. Some were sightseeing, some. For fishing and others for multiple day scuba diving trips. I thought it would be great to return here some day soon and go out on a diving tour for several days. It would be important to have a professional underwater camera to document 10-15 dives. Normally one does a maximum of two dives per day. One is normally underwater for an hour on each dive and the body is affected by the strain of moving underwater and the water pressure. Thus, two dives and one feels exhausted. I was planning to do only one dive because of the buildup of gases in my blood system and we were scheduled to fly to Sydney the following day. One has to give the body time to get rid of nitrogen in one's blood system from breathing from scuba tanks before one gets on a plane. My scuba supervisor did the math and said that I could do two dives and still be safe for our flight. When I heard this, I almost ran him over in order to rush and get into my diving gear. Two dives at the Great Barrier Reef! I think I died and went to heaven!…

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…
