    Are police ever justified in committing illegal acts that violate others rights are they ever justified especially when there is no personal gain but for reasons that may seem to be about a higher purpose. This is the argument for noble cause corruption. This idea brings it to the end justifies the means thinking. If we start down this line where can it lead us? The idea that we can justify any action that would violate civil rights and other laws because we feel that our cause is noble and it is not being done for personal gain but the good of others can lead us into some dark places. The noble cause thinking is able to lead us to think any action or violation is fine because the end product will be worth it. I have to admit this thinking worries me greatly not just on a national level where I think we see quite a bit of this but may not always recognize it as such, but personally I have had this happen in my job. I was called out to meet with a young girl I believe she was 11 at the time and had reported her brother- in – law for sexual abuse it had been going on for several years. The officer in charge could not get her to give him a statement beyond he did this and it was a lot of times and then she shut down on him. I explained that her sister kicked him out he left the area and he was gone from her life, she accomplished what she wanted to have happen the offender disappear. The officer asked me to secretly record her and turn the tape over to him and if I would not do it he would have someone else speak to her and the person he was asking was the mother of another one of his victims. I thought this was a good example of noble cause. I of course had to speak to his chief and let the parent of the girl know that someone else was going to talk to her and that is when I learned it was the mother of the other victim.     The criminal justice system is made up of three component agencies, which are the police, courts, and corrections. The police are to enforce the laws and investigate crimes. They apprehend the offenders and reduce and prevent crime. The court is to conduct fair and impartial trails and deciding criminal cases. The court is suppose to ensure due process and determine if the person is guilty or innocence in the changes against them. The corrections is suppose to carry out the sentences imposed be the courts and provide a safe and humane custody and supervision of the offenders. The corrections are to protect the community and rehabilitate, reform, and reintegrate convicted offenders back into the community. The criminal justice process is a standard sequence of events that begins when the crime is detected. It consists of five major stages, which are investigation and arrest, pretrial activities, trail, sentencing, and the corrections. The investigation and arrest begins with an investigation of the crime commented. Evidence is collected at the scene to put together a sequence of activities or events that may have took place. After the evidence is gathered then they issue a warrant by the judicial officer directing a law enforcement officer to perform a specific act. After the person is arrested is when they question the person about the time, place, and the reason for the arrest. The next stage is the criminal justice process is the pretrial activities, where the person gets his or her first appearance, preliminary hearing, information or indictment, and arraignment for the crime that is against them. The trail is where the person accused is giving a trail to see if he or she is found guilty or not. The sentencing is when the person is found guilty by the judge and is required to pay a fine, be placed on probation, or incarcerated for the crime.     When you begin to get into police discretion, you have to first bring up the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. Did the subject mean to do whatever the issue is? Is there intent? When I was first married years ago my wife had gotten a parking ticket in Hoke County, NC. It was one of those things that got poked away in her glove box. I had found the ticket and taken it to the Hoke County courthouse to pay it. I paid by check (that is how we used to do things.) I was working as the patrol supervisor for the MPs at Fort Bragg on midnight shift a few days later when the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office came calling. It was time for her to go to jail for failure to appear. My wife told the deputy that I had paid the ticket and this was a mistake. After seeing our young toddler son and his nearly hysterical mother (I can only imagine) the deputy decided he would give that warrant a 24 hour cushion before acting.
