6 Things You Should Know About Alexa Rossi
Me in a Nutshell
Lacrosse is my passion.
Ever since the first time I stepped on the field when I was in third grade lacrosse has been my life. I had been playing soccer since I was five, but my travel coach never put me in, and I came off the field crying countless times. My family agreed I shouldn’t play something with no passion, so I moved on. I signed up for the girls shark river third grade lacrosse team. Not only was the team incredibly inviting, but the coaches were so enthusiastic about new players. My first game they let me start, and now seven years later I have found my one true passion.
2. I am a slow reader.
Reading has always been the one subject that I struggled with. I could write and spell, but I always got put in the lowest reading level of my elementary class. I have come a long way from that now, but I still take a lot longer than my classmates to finish reading. My lexile was pretty good for my AT class last year which was a major accomplishment for me regarding academics. My goal for this year is to try and get my reading speed up.

I am an overachiever.
This year I might be getting in way to over my head. Me being the person I am decided to take honors english, geometry, biology, US world history, and spanish two. Now I thought that taking all honors would keep me busy enough, but at orientation some upperclassmen recruited me to play field hockey. All of this is in addition to my job as a senior ref where I spend two hours every night watching referees and critiquing their technique. Also I need to get fifty hours every year for honors society, so I am in the process of getting accepted to volunteer at the local

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

My 2012-13 lacrosse started off with a 10-3 lose to Central Square and then more losses down the road to teams from all over. It was a rough season for all of us on the team and for the coaches. Kids showed up to practice and worked hard but the record wasn't showing that. Staying positive and keeping our…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

Freshman year; everyone in the high school, Highland, is required to play at least two seasons of sports in their high school career. Now, last year I was head over heels into riding (no pun intended). Feeling this way, I thought I would have no time for any other sports and would just get an exemption from my horse trainer to excuse me from sports. But, my best friend, Kayla Soltys then came into play. Kayla plays two sports, lacrosse and basketball. Kayla was very persistent in asking me to play lacrosse that spring and finally, I gave in. I thought it would be cool to try a new sport and I would have nothing to lose, only things to gain such as endurance and better hand eye coordination. What I did not know was that, lacrosse is so much…

I also am terrible at spelling, I think a big part of that is sounding out words. In middle school I was very blessed to have a teacher named Ms. Carver, she helped me a ton with reading from where I was to a reading at a score of 115 ish to around 700-800 which hasn't changed much to now. I would go inside almost every day doing lunch just because I wanted to learn how to read like the other kids and I am willing to work as hard now. Taking this class is a big step for me, from being in all special ed classes in middle school to now taking this class! Another struggle I have is my health, I have problem with my stomach, such as IBS. I seem to get sick very quick but this summer I've been working on my health and my hope is to not have any flair ups that make me sick doing the school year. My long time goal in life is to be in the medical field traveling and helping people in one way or…

Ever since kicking my first soccer ball during Kinder Kicks, soccer has become a fundamental aspect of my life. Not only have I been playing the sport since then, but the sport has also influenced me beyond solely playing it. It is the culture surrounding the game as well. It is waking up early every Saturday morning to watch the Liverpool game, or getting ready to cheer on the New England Revolution in Gillette Stadium in the evenings. Soccer has been embedded everywhere in my life, from the posters on my bedroom walls to the jerseys that continue to accumulate on my closet floor. This passion has driven me to share the sport with as many as I can. With the Natick Soccer Organization, I have been organizing tournaments for U10 and U14 boys…

As a young boy of about nine or ten, it was a dream of mine to play on my school’s Varsity Soccer team. I spent many nights watching the current players contest with other schools for the title of WPIAL Champions. Being a young club soccer player, this was my ultimate goal. Now even though I had a strong passion for the game, my many years of club soccer were not easy. I was not a sub-par player, but I was also not the prodigy that some of my teammates were. I had to work much harder than most players to secure my starting spot on my team, but my efforts definitely payed off. For the first five or six years of club soccer, I held a spot as one of my team’s two starting center defenders. All of a sudden, while at a rainy tournament game in West Virginia, I went into a tackle wrong and injured my back. My entire soccer career went downhill from…

Being a freshman at Miami University, many things are very different from the public school educational background back in Brooklyn, NY, where I was born and raised, until now residing in Oxford, OH, attending college. So far I have completed my first semester of college. I play football for the Miami University Football Team, but did not get to play my first year. So basically my hobbies are really just football. I attend Miami to study and receive my bachelors in Kinesiology/ Athletic Training. It is a real interesting and very fun major to be studying. I am not to very sure about any minors, because my academic interest has so many different opportunities just under that one major. I am currently taking 18 credit hours this semester. I have 3 Kinesiology courses, KNH 212, KNH 209, and KNH 206. AMS 207 (American Studies), ENG 105, ENG 112 (English), and EDT 110. Most of the writing assignments in my courses are very similar. We complete papers on the argumentative debates of topics, comparison, rhetoric etc.…

I began playing lacrosse in middle school. Since I was new to the sport I was determined to become a better athlete for the upcoming high school season. Spring season of ninth grade, I made junior variety lacrosse. We had an amazing season and made memories that will last forever. Unfortunately, during the season, I injured my ankle and was out for most of the season. Even though I was injured, I was still a team player and always supported my team in every way possible. When my injury healed, junior varsity's season was over, but varsity had made the play-offs. I was one of several girls who was pulled up for the play-offs that season. Every girl knew what to expect. We knew our place and were excited and proud of the older girls for doing so well. This opportunity for all the younger girls improved our skills tremendously and we got a feel for how a varsity game is played.…

Lacrosse has been the hardest sport I have tried in my life, but also the sport that motivated me the most to become better and understand the concept of the game. Lacrosse has a universal language of what happens on the field, and also, every individual team has their own different language. I had to learn both and multiple different ones for the multiple teams I have played on. The unique language varies between every teams; the unique language helps the girls on my team tell each other stuff without the other team understanding. The language was difficult for me to understand and pick up, but after a few day, I started to remember it and use it. It helps the game run swiftly and…

Over the course of the semester, I was able to work with a fifth grade student, Luke, on his reading. Luke is currently reading at an end of first grade level. At the beginning of the semester, when I first began working with Luke, he was reading at an early first grade level. He has shown much improvement over the three cycles that I worked with him on. Not only did he improve with his reading, but also I saw his confidence increase after each cycle.…

A year ago I was just an ordinary MAA Junior high schooler. But now I’m a Senior and I want to graduate. I first started thinking about all the classes that I wanted to take this year so that I could have a good idea of what my future job would be like. Since I want to become an airline pilot, I need to have a 4 year college/university degree. The airline doesn’t care that much of the degree, but I do. So I decided to get a major in engineering; specifically aeronautical engineering. So for my senior year I’m going to take physics and precalculus. At first I was getting nervous because I knew that they were hard classes and that they’ll expect a lot from me, but now I’m glad that I chose those classes. The reason why I care so much about my…
