staff incomers and/or instructors. It is the instructor responsibility to ensure that the class discussions are based solely around first aid. Any discussions outside of that realm should be asked not to take place and the individual making the remarks to leave (or reported to a Manager at the company). In this case, an inappropriate and discriminatory comment made by an incomer to the class during mid-morning break caused a situation where by one student left the training session and did not want to return. Once the instructor was informed about the situation, they immediately apologized to the class and wished to apologize to the participant who had left. The class continued and a written report of the situation was completed by the instructor. Rescue 7 Inc.’s CEO, John Collie, and General Manager, Michele McCabe, were advised of the situation by the client and immediately following, the instructor. Two conference calls were made with the client: first to find out more about the situation, while the second was to discuss our remedial process with the instructor.
Two conference calls with the instructor were also conducted: first to discuss their report after the class and second, to discuss remedial procedures and probation teaching any future sessions. The instructor was very apologetic and was very willing to take the required the online Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention along with two other deemed necessary training sessions as part of their remedial process. After the completion of the additional training, the instructor was monitored twice (one spot check by a secret participant) to ensure that they were committed to our policy. The instructor has learned a lot from the unfortunate situation and now continuously ensures that all participants are treated with respect and dignity by doing a brief introduction at the beginning of his classes on the classroom rules. While the instructor has since continued to teach Rescue 7 Inc. sessions, they are still unable to teach at the original client’s site and undergoes semi-annual spot
checks. We were very happy that our instructor realized how their non-actions causes such an unfortunate event, but that they took full responsibility of the situation to learn from their mistakes so that no future events will occur.
It is noted, that if any instructors themselves are the root cause of the workplace violence, bullying and/or harassment, they will be dismissed and their instructor status revoked, effective immediately.
