I was mostly nervous because I would have to walk up onto the stage in front of over a hundred people. I didn’t want to go because of how nervous I was. The school day was uneventful. We went over what we were supposed to do in the gym multiple times. Even though the day was boring and uneventful, I was nervous the entire school day. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey states, “Putting first things first also deals with learning to overcome your fears and being strong during hard moments” (Covey 106). Walking into the locker room about to get ready to go to our last football game of the season. I could smell the sweaty equipment from the kids who never take their pads home. The Hempfield Spartans 7th grade team would be ending their season 0-7 if we didn’t win today. As I was changing into my pads my friend mike walked in the room. I said “you ready for tonight”. “Heck yeah” replied Mike.…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

Honesty, authenticity, genuineness, bravery, and valor are my top strengths. I was shocked by these results not only because I feel they are extremely accurate, but these are the things I value most in life, especially honesty, I feel that you can hate a man to the core, but if that man is a truly honest man you can only respect him. I want to be an epitome of a truly honest man, and I believe my character strengths will help me achieve this goal. My bottom strengths were the love of learning, self-control, and regulation. I feel these strengths are just as important as my top strengths, and I need to maximize them all in order to become a great leader. Marilyn Vos Savant “Success is achieved by developing our strengths not by eliminating our…

I use the advice you gave Dan almost every day. I get teased about my schedules. I just asked my daughter to tell me what we have to get accomplished by ten tonight. She gave me a list of things and I wrote them down. We worked together to plan the order of events to make sure everything gets done. Both of my girls write out list when there are multiple tasks to complete in a day. This shows that it is a learned behavior for those who do not use sequence at a use first level.…

After completing the StregthsQuest survey, I learned that my five greatest strengths are Harmony, Competition, Achiever, Includer, and Communication. Some of these strengths I had previously recognized as a strength, but a few were a surprise to me. Growing up, I was always a competitive person. I enjoyed the thrill of winning, whether it be in a team effort or individual effort. Also, I have always wanted to achieve great things in both my personal and professional life. I believe that I have always been great at communicating with others and love to include others in everything that I do to achieve a goal. The biggest strength of mine that surprised me most was Harmony. However, after reading about each strength, I know how I have utilized…

I’ve always had lofty, perhaps unrealistic. In middle school, I naively assumed that I would be in top 12% of my class, by simply making A’s. I tried my hardest in every classes, but still wasn’t enough. I never reached my goal of being in top 12%, as a result my self-esteem plummeted. I started high school with high hopes once again. Perhaps even more naively, I pursued the goal of being ranked number one. I was too young to realize the concept of “realistic” goals. My biggest obstacle was my state of mind. I brought my self-down. I told myself the only way to be the best is to be better than everyone else. Setting such a high goal did help me in the end. After the second semester of freshman year, I received my rank. I was ranked number 10;…

A major theme in my life is improvement. I challenge myself to take risks and set high expectations for myself. For instance, I strive to run faster and for longer distances every couple of times I approach the treadmill belt. I am obstinate about my minimum distance, 2.2 miles, and my minimum speed, 6.8. A major component of improving myself is learning. Every new word is a miniscule enhancement of my massive English vocabulary pool, but it is still a step in the right direction. I enjoy becoming more knowledgeable in both domestic and international affairs. I wish I could have more time to pour into reading current event and health articles. I am particularly attached to drumming the latest scientific discovery or innovate biotechnology product…

As a member of the Grey Highlands Secondary School’s Youth Health Council, I took initiative to start a Pick-Up Sports opportunity for high school students to play recreational sports Friday after school for one hour. I felt that my school environment was lacking in opportunities for students to play uncompetitive sports. Therefore, at a weekly Youth Health Council meeting, I introduced the idea, and it was accepted by all members. Our supervisor talked to our school principal to get approval for the activity to run. Once we got approval, other members of the Council and I talked to the coaches of the school competitive sports teams that were happening at that time to ensure the gym was available Friday after school for recreational sports.…
