Personal Narrative: The Black Mafia
I heard once that Snoop Dogg said it ain’t nothin wrong with joining a gang
It’s cool because all of your friends are in a gang
And then there’s another side that says if you join a gang you’ll be part of fights, theft, and killings
And I know this is true but like Marky Mark I had to try this for myself
You see I started with this one gang called the Green gang, which means we wronged somebody
And most definitely did over time, but I got offers from the Black Mafia family
Who promised quick money, bigger cars, and Versace clothes, then I was it
But everytime I try to do one thing with one gang, I got imperiled by another
For example, one time I picking up Cold Heat from the hospital from a gunshot wound
And this Guy Robert said stop you gotta

One time I was taking Ill Intent’s Jody to daycare and member of the Black Mafia
Said that I needed me to help him with his sociology test on Modernization
And I learned Ain't no half-steppin', don’t rep two gangs (Scratching)
Then one time I was selling cubes on the street with the BMF and Illtime wanted to play basketball
What a compromise like Jermaine O’neals, I remember one time studying perception in psychology
And then being asked to sell some Boomers, and I did not turn in my homework
What I learned Ain't no half-steppin', don’t rep two gangs (Scratching)
One time I was benchpressing 140 pounds and then a member of the BMF wanted me to steal a bike
I said homie why don’t you just get a car, he said well you still take the bus
I heard someone say that if you believe in God, you can believe in anything, you can believe in the gang mentality
And I definitely believe in God
And I then I remember one time I was on Hawthorne Street selling reefer, when another gang member
In Scott Circle DC said today they were going to ruin S Street Dog Park, and then I had to go there
You see I just wanted to kick it on some real shit, before I had the Ferraris, the Zenvos, the Bugattis
The Burberry clothes, Marc Jacobs and Gucci, I was street hustler hustling to make

Presently, youths and adolescent teens have become progressively enticed to join gangs. An individual joining a gang or a non-criminal group consists of different pushes and pulls that work in tandem to represent an attraction or dominating force. In this case, for example, “gang membership can increase status among peers, especially girls (for boys)” while also allowing the opportunity to be with them (Why Do Youth Join Gangs?). Gangs also provide a sense of excitement through illicit drug selling and the ability to earn money. By committing these illicit acts, youths perceive themselves making a rational choice in their decision to join a gang. It is assumed candidates for gangs are already delinquent or have a high probability for delinquency…

After reading, “Rest in Peace, Doc,” and,” The Outsiders,” I learned that people, (especially younger adults) join gangs for a spectrum of reasons. Furthermore, some may join because they have limited life options or they may join because they want to. Whatever the reason is, no matter what, it is an illogical decision to join a gang. People in,” The Outsiders,” joined for a few different reasons. One example is,a partly main character, Steve, joined from peer-pressure. On page nine, it states that,”He was cocky, smart, and Soda’s best friend.” If Soda was in the gang before Steve was, Steve probably wanted to be like Soda and/or, Soda pressured him into becoming a Greaser. In addition, a character in,” The Outsiders,” named Two-Bit, joined for the adrenaline rush or the adventure of it. On page ten in the book, the text states,”... and he was always smarting off to the cops.” This meaning, he always liked to be on the very edge of getting in trouble with…

Fortunately, there are people who realize that joining a gang was a bad life-changing experience. Who decide to change their course of life and seek for help. Over the course of time, there have been many positive places and groups that support these individuals. My favorite one so far that I recently learned about is the Homeboy Industries. The Homeboy Industries is a youth program founded in 1992 founded in 1992 by Father Greg Boyle, S.J. following the work of the Christian base communities at Dolores Mission Church. This placed is seemed by thousands of people who have been in gangs and incarcerated and want to transform their lives for the better. This program helps them tremendously from helping them remove their tattoos on their body to offer them a job so they can earn their money.…

The United States has had problems with gangs dated back as early as the 1800s. In today’s society when people hear about gangs the first two gangs that they think of are the Bloods and the Crips. Both of these gangs originated about forty years ago but are still going strong today. Although, at first these gangs were formed as a sort of territorial war the activities of the gang members has grown increasingly more dangerous. The Bloods and the Crips are mortal enemies and are extremely feared throughout the country.…

Supporting my claim, Stanton E. Samenow states, “Gangs offer a hierarchy of leadership and a path to gain approval and achieve success.” This statement discusses how gangs offer a way to gain leadership. Dr. Samenow also states, “ In almost every instance of my interviewing a gang member, that person had siblings or neighbors living nearby who faced similar or even worse adversities and were confronted by the same temptations…

Gangs and cults at first glance may seem very different, and in some ways they are, but when you look closer their cultures are very similar. Cults promote a particular belief system, recruiting members by tricking them or influencing them to believe what they are teaching or telling them. Gangs pretty much do the same thing. They create glorified myths about the gang that appeal to young recruits, and far too often these myths become the foundation for young aspirations. Gangs differ from cults by promising things like money, sex, power, and materialistic things to their members. In the following essay I will show how the two groups have similar and different cultures when it comes to the use of symbols, behaviors, and language.…

Gang-related crimes are one of the most discussed issues in criminal justice system. The root of gang violence could to be traced to as early as the 1900s. In the film, Crips and Bloods: Made in America, African Americans were being oppressed under the Jim Crow Law, which allowed for the legal segregation of Blacks and Whites. By forcing Blacks into their neighborhoods, the LAPD’s actions resulted in segregation, alienation and development of self-hatred (Peralta, 2008). At first, many activist groups were formed such as the Black Panther, though they never considered themselves as a gang but as a club (Peralta, 2008). Eventually, the groups were terminated and then African Americans found themselves helpless which lead to the formation of street gangs. Crips and Bloods are the biggest well-known gangs: it was formed due to racism (Peralta, 2008). “The Punitive propensity in the U.S. gang policies all too often ignores the context of offending and…

Female members are usually admitted into the gang by participating in sex with the established male members. Criminal activities of these groups can vary from region to region or can be based on a mutual agreement between two or more gangs, creating a reciprocal benefit for all the groups involved. Crime committed by the stereotypical or “main stream” street level gangs, such as the Bloods, People Nation or Nazi Lowriders, usually involve the sale and distribution of narcotics, assaults, robbery, theft, burglary, prostitution, extortion and murder. The illegal actions taken by these groups often brings them into direct conflict of with other gangs, typically when attempting to engage in business in the opposing groups perceived or claimed territory; these conflicts will usually result in extreme violence, and while these attacks may result in the deaths of gang members on both sides, collateral damage usually occurs to outside parties. Oftentimes, it is the neighborhoods in which the gangs reside which is impacted the most, with destruction of personal property, injuries and non-combatant deaths. Because of the skewed values of these disassociated youth and the violence that follows them, several law enforcement agencies have created anti-gangs task forces or violent crime suppression units to counter these…

When a gang becomes a genuine gang it is at this time when they become a great concern as a threat to society. The formation, expansion and the consequent actions of gangs greatly affect society. It has been consistently found that gangs are normally linked to serious crimes and violence (Decker, Melde & Pyrooz, 2013). As these gangs become constant and stable fixtures in their community they become a permanent option for marginalized…

There are many different reasons as to why a young person may join a gang that lives in the inner city, however for this paper, only a few will be discussed. One reason that a young person may join a gang is peer pressure from other teenagers and the need to fit in. A young person growing up in a family that has gang members in it is another reason for a young person to join a gang. “One way to know about gangs is to know gang members, to live with gang members, to see gang members on neighborhood streets” (Cadwallader 2002). If a young person is exposed to gangs then the chances are good that they will join that gang so that they fit in or to make their family members…

When I was growing up we had little cliques in the neighborhood but nothing that we really considered a gang. There were no initiation rights or anything crazy that needed to be done in order to join except living in the same area. We also didn’t engage in violent activities, maybe some juvenile mischief but nothing criminal like selling crack or stealing cars. Part of this may be because I was a girl then and the activities we took part in were nothing like what the boys did. As a young teen some of my friends did get involved in some kinds of criminal activity but still it was nothing I considered to be a gang.…
