A couple years ago on Christmas morning, my brother and I were opening our presents when we were given passports but we didn’t know what they were at this time. Our parents told us that we were going on a mission trip to Mexico. Even though we begged to not have to go and refused our parents made us both go.
We traveled for 2 ½ days until we got to El Paso, TX. Part of the Hero’s Journey and one of the most important parts of it is meeting with the mentors. While in the United States, I felt very safe as I always do but as soon as we crossed the border it was strange and I was always scared. The feeling of always being at home had left me because we were in a dangerous country. If you go to the Bahamas or some other place you will more than likely feel relaxed and at home but Mexico was and still is a very dangerous place.
The 2nd most important part of the Hero’s Journey is probably the heroes tests, challenges, and their allies during their journey. While we were in Mexico, outside the camp there were many dangers. Some of the men inside the town were very dangerous and some had previously been in prison. Another enemy was just a simple coyote. They would run in circles around our camp and howl all night. If I was in Mexico at the age that I am now, I probably wouldn’t be afraid like I was back
