My mother was brutally murdered two years ago by the Lottery. When she opened her paper and the dot was there my heart had dropped. It was only the two of us. My mom was the only family I had. My father had passed away ten years ago when I was six ,and I don't …show more content…
have any siblings. So we had to go against each other. They put a blank paper and the dotted paper back in the box. Then my mother picked a paper and so did I. I was so scared but I opened it. And of course it had to be her. I tried to hold in all my tears so she wouldn't see me cry. I mean I even tried to hold on to her. She yelled at me to let go of her and that this was her purpose for the society. She believed in the Lottery she believed this helped the society come together as one. She also told me how much she loved me and to become stronger from this experience. She walked into the middle and gave me a weary smile and before I knew what had happened the first rock hit her. The thick thud of the rock hitting her skull making a slushy cracking sound. Then all the other rocks began to rain down on her. All I could do was watch and hear her bloodcurdling screams. At first you heard her shrieking, later wailing, after that mumbles, and then nothing. Everyone went their separate ways when they saw she stopped moving. Just in time for lunch. Like it was just a normal day.
The time has come to start the Lottery.
I've never liked the Lottery. I never enjoyed such useless death especially after my mom ,yet there is nothing that I can do. The elders believe we need to have it ,but other villages had already gave up on this stupid tradition. I just wish our village would do the same. Mr. Summers with the black faded wooden box has become a fear of mine. I have been having nightmares ,and it is hard to not get anxiety around him. All the heads of the households have to pick for their families ,and since I don't have one I just pick for myself. Mr. Summers goes through his list and starts calling people's names. One by one people go to the podium to take their slips of paper out of the box. Miss Lewis I heard Mr.Summers say. I walked up to him and he smiles at me but I gave him a blank expression. My hands began to shake and I felt faint but I ended up choosing my slip. I went back to my spot and waited for the rest of the names to be …show more content…
called.
Mr.
Summers announced it was time for us to open are slips. Everyone stayed still for what seemed like forever. Then Mr. Hutchinson opened his paper and soon others followed. As I heard everyone exhaling in relief that they didn't get called I began to become nervous. And without a thought in the world I just opened it. And there I saw it. The black dot made from the pencil from the coal company. After the sighs of relief died down people began to wonder who got the paper. I tried to regain my composure ,but before I could hide the slip Mr. Graves looked over me. He called out to everyone that I had gotten it. Everyone began to stare at me. Mr Summers cleared his throat and he spoke up said since you are the only one in the family then you will be chosen. While still in a state of shock and I look around and see the crowd starting to form around me. Then it all hit me I'm going to die ,and there is nothing I can do. I chose to remain still. I will not let them think they have an upper hand on me. I slipped into thought and had thunk to myself at least I will see my family again. I at least I will see them. Then everything went black as I was hit in the back of my
head.
