When it comes to school, I guess you could say that my mom was a bit of a nerd. She was extremely smart and exceeded in every class. She went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. She said, about this school, “Not much happened here, I was placed in Reading and Math groups by myself, and no, I was never hit with rulers over the knuckles by the nuns, if you were wondering.” In middle school, she was placed in an advanced class and by the time she left she was finished with all her required high school math classes. She was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society where she held the office of Secretary. In high school, since she was a big nerd, she took college level math courses and AP in all other classes. She also played…

There is no better way to bond with other people than to see them raw, vulnerable, and pushed to their bodies absolute limit at six o’clock in the morning, “Mama Duck, good run.” The nickname stuck. At first it was a little odd, but it grew on me really quickly. Anyone that I had ever once encountered my presents understood the name. It was cute, so of course, I went with it. However, no one understood my nickname more than my little ducklings- my cross country teammates.…

I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…

My mother’s parents would always share stories with us about how their parents came to America from Italy and Germany. They would bring out old photo albums and tell us all about how different life was for them and how they held on to family cooking recipes and every Christmas we make the same dishes that their parents would make. My father’s parents would also share stories about Ireland and my grandpa would talk about what he experienced when he was in the war. Unlike the family I interviewed, I was brought up in a Christian household. Every Sunday the whole family would attend church together and then go out to eat after to talk about what we had learned. We would also pray every night before bed and were always told to give thanks throughout the day for the life we have been blessed with.…

Suddenly, I woke to the sound of pain and stress. In the dimmed hotel room, my mother was laid roughly on the bed motioning that she didn’t feel well. We had traveled the far and exciting journey to Las Vegas to witness my mom finish a half marathon. It was an event that she had spent minutes, hours, days, and months training for. I couldn’t believe that after all of the work my mom had done in the past year, she wouldn’t be able to compete on the big day. I was wrong though when my mom sat up, tidied her tangled hair and nonchalantly said, “let’s do this”.…

A marijuana activist is someone who simply wants to bring common decency and justice to their country, their community, our world. We're just trying to bring sanity and faith to America, the ability to believe in the American dream, in America. The slogan that won the Presidency of the United States shouldn’t have been “Make America Great Again”, it should be “Make it better than it was before, make it the great it has yet to achieve, make it what we were all taught through the television and in schools, one nation. A land of freedom and opportunity.” But we're not so free as long as there is a drug war, where your personal choice for medicine or recreation can be used against you, I’m thinking about these things while reflecting on the Lance…

Marijuana is a powerful addictive drug, it will change your life from the first time you use it. It has no beneficial qualities for your health at any circumstance. Or at least, that was what I was informed from the authorities in my life till I was seventeen. I vowed to never speak to any of my friends if I heard of them using the abomination of a plant. I did just that on two different occasions and they were friends I had since elementary school. However, when I was seventeen I learned the true identity of cannabis when I saw it for the first time.
