Personal Narrative: The Possibility Of Death
When we’re young, we think that nothing can hurt us, we’re invincible, and there’s a good chance we can live forever. We want to do many things that are risky and questionable without even thinking about the possibility of death. We don't realize what could've happened until we are older and have more of a realization of death and its entirety. At seventeen, I have had my fair share of near death experiences and look back and think to myself how life could be over in an instant. Death isn't really about if and how it’s going to happen, but when it’s going to happen. In Steve Job’s 2005 commencement speech for Stanford University, he states, “Remembering I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the …show more content…
We should try not to live by ordinary standards, but we should take life, and what we do with it, to the fullest potential. We, as people, should stop being so scared to venture out and try new things. Death is an inevitable thing faced by every living organism on earth. Jobs states at the end of his speech, “And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.” This statement, I feel, has really crossed everyones mind at some point in their life. We come to a realization that there really isn't enough time to do what we want to do. Everything that we want to accomplish soon seems like we are unable to do so because of this realization that life isn't that long. The subject of death can either be a positive or negative title for people. Jobs had covered both sides of the story talking about his pre and post cancer story. Our short lives should really be about living rather than surviving. There’s so much to do in so little time, so might as well have fun in doing whatever it is we decide to do. Death isn’t really about if and how it’s going to happen, but when it’s going to

The film Griefwalker by Tim Wilson is an interesting documentary that chronicles the the work and teaching/counseling of Stephen Jenkinson a palliative care counselor that has been at the deathbed of over 1000 people. Jenkinson will say that ‘the crucible of human life is death’. In other words, our love of life stems not from wealth or even happiness, but that we are all destined to die one day. That’s why we love life. The same concept is talked about in the movie Troy where Achilles says that ‘the gods envy us.…

During this speech he stated something very important. Steve Jobs argued that death is the best motivator and I completely agree because if life was eternal we would not strive for greatness. Death frightens us. Therefore, acknowledging one’s wish to willingly end his or her life is difficult for the average person to understand. Though we are aware that our days are finite, we live with the false hope that technology may advance by the time we reach the end of our lives to substantially extend them. However, what about those people who have reached the end of their lives? For them, choosing to commit suicide, or willingly end their lives, is simply accelerating the inevitable.…

With time, society slowly gains more power and dominance over the minds of the people being baited into their own image of life. Death is portrayed as the end of life, but with each death comes new life to nurture and foresee. Ezekiel Emanuel, author of “Why I Hope to Die at 75”, discusses his ideal date of death, which would naturally cause controversy between many people. Through his experiences, outlook of the world, and statistics, Emanuel came up with the number 75, which he defends resolutely. In “Pursuing a Peaceful Death”, author Daniel Callahan takes death very seriously and how people should die. He talks about different ways death can lose its meaning and what it means to have a peaceful death. Edward Tenner, author of…

Death is something that every human must face. It is the inevitable conclusion to life and is something that humans have had to come to terms with since the dawn of their existence. This is very clear in many of the writings and stories that human beings have told throughout history. This obsession about the ultimate culmination of life is heavily expressed in literary works like The Epic of Gilgamesh, Virgil’s The Aeneid, and Beowulf.…

The day you realize we are going to die, is the day you change the way you look at things. We are all really “half asleep,” walking around, doing the things we feel we must do, like paying bills, but need to simplify, and learn to really live, learn to love. Morrie says “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live,” and his words prove true. We all go about our day, not even thinking what can happen at a moments notice. We do not always realize that we may not be here tomorrow. Morrie says that once we have that moment of realization, we live differently. We live as we are going to die tomorrow. Luckily for me, I have had that moment very early in life. My family unfortunately had to deal with a tragedy, the murder of my uncle Junny Rios-Martienez. He was two weeks from the age of 12. They taught me very early that I should live my life like he did, and really live it. My grandmother told me “Life is a gift, don’t let it go to waste by worrying about all the small things, or else you will miss out ”…

“Death is more universal than life; everyone dies, but not everyone lives,” quoted by Alan Sachs. Death is a part of everyone and touches everyone’s lives a little differently. It is a topic is that is usually followed by forms of sadness from the people associated with the person who passes away. What death is considered would be the end of someone’s life; they stop breathing and their body stops working. Death can come unexpectedly, it can be anticipated, but it is never easy. Due to many adults having a difficult time accepting death, they feel that the topic of death is too hard for children to understand; they believe the children should be kept uninformed. In Literature for Children A Short Introduction, Author David Russell explains…

When steve jobs passed away it was a huge devastation, but he said he lived his life how he wanted. Mark Twain once said, “ The fear of death follows from the fear of life, A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” , and I think Steve Jobs was prepared. Some people are scared of death because they don't know what comes after. I think there should be no fear when you're about to die. There are many perceptions on death and I love Oscar wilde's perception. “ Death must be so beautiful , to lie in the soft brown earth, with the grassess waving above ones head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget life, to forget time, to be at peace.” - Oscar Wildes. The point is everyone has their own way to look at life and death, and as long as you accept it and are comfortable with it that's all that…

    Life and Death Overtakes

Death is a dreaded word. It is a word that many people would not want to talk about. Death is considered a morbid word and many would not find this as an engaging topic. According to Patricelli (2007), “[d]eath remains a great mystery, one of the central issues with which religion and philosophy and science have wrestled since the beginning of human history. Even though dying is a natural part of existence, American culture is unique in the extent to which death is viewed as a taboo topic. Rather than having open discussions, we tend to view death as a feared enemy that can and should be defeated by modern medicine and machines”. There are also people that have negative connotations about death, rendering life even meaningless because of it. Death appears to render life meaningless for many people because they feel that there is no point in developing character or increasing knowledge if our progress is ultimately going to be thwarted by death (Augustine, 2000). But the author contends that there is a point in developing character and increasing knowledge before death overtakes us: to provide peace of mind and intellectual satisfaction to our lives and to the lives of those we care about for their own sake because pursuing these goals enriches our lives. From the fact that death is inevitable it does not follow that nothing we do matters now. On the contrary, our lives matter a great deal to us. If they did not, we would not find the idea of our own death so distressing--it wouldn't matter that our lives will come to an end. The fact that we're all eventually going to die has no relevance to whether our activities are worthwhile in the here and now: For an ill patient in a hospital a doctor's efforts to alleviate pain certainly does matter despite the fact that 'in the end' both the doctor and the patient will be dead (Augustine).…

Death is a necessity to culture and society therefore it is irrational to fear the unenviable and the necessary. Death whether physical or non-physical will always cause change. The change that is caused by death does not always have to be direct but can manifest itself as an indirect change. Throughout time societies have risen and fallen, times changes, nothing is ever going to stay the same. Death is a factor that will impact everyone who is alive as they will meet death. As society’s change and cultures evolve so do the people; to keep change occurring death must ensue for creation to occur. Society’s and cultures depend on death. Death is the drive of progression which drives society’s and cultures to get farther from the unetible death.…

How do we foresee death? How do we as humans accept fate, that all living must die? Sometimes its is hard to understand as shown in the poems, Janet waking by John Crowe Ranson, Because I could not stop for death by Emily Dickenson, and Barbie doll by Marge Pierce. Death can be seen differently by everyone and these authors definitely had different views. In the poem “Because I could not stop for death” the author has personified death, as if to make it easier for the reader.…
