Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Cheerleading
Most people say cheerleading is not a sport, but to me it is. It all began when I was four years old and my mom signed me up to cheer for the Harrisburg Packers. I was nervous at first, but then it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on the team was tall except for me and one other girl. Her name was Tatum. The first thing I thought was that I was going to get picked on by all the other girls because I was so little and shy, but it turned out to be totally different. As the years progressed and I reached middle school, I started cheering for the Harrisburg Cougars. Cheering for the Cougars was nothing like cheering for the Packers. Games were twice as crowded and the cheerleading squad was filled with plenty of girls. Everyone had to

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

At a normal summer camp, a few dozen fifteen-year-old girls wouldn’t be told to spend a night alone in the woods. Camp Cheerio isn’t a normal summer camp. I’ve been going to Camp Cheerio every summer since I was eight years old, and I’ve loved every second of being there. The summer before sophomore year of high school was the last year that I could be a camper. Part of being in your last year as a camper is doing CREW. The acronym “CREW” stands for Courage, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, and Worth. In CREW all of the last year campers do things such as team building, being a counselor for a day, hiking eleven miles to and from Stone Mountain, and more. However, the most significant part of CREW was doing Solo Night. During Solo Night, each…

My partner of eleven years is my greatest cheerleader. When I feel overwhelmed and depressed she gives me encouragement to conquer every challenge I’m faced with. In addition to my partner, another influential person in my life is a co-worker and friend. She fills the maternal role that is absent in my life, by giving me advice, different perspectives, and confidence. My career plays a vital role in my resilience, it gives me cause to wake up and achieve greatness each day. The children I work with inspire me to be a better educator, nurturer, and caregiver. When I am feeling depressed nothing lifts my spirits speedier, than my students. I believe it is a gift to have the availability to focus on constructing children’s strengths, rather than…

When I asked Alexis, a cheerleader at Thornton High what her thoughts were on cheer being a sport, she said, “It bothers me when people say what I do isn’t a sport. I work out, I compete, I am a part of a team, I practice. I know we don’t actually play a game or throw a ball but that is the only thing that sets us apart from the sports. Cheerleading is as much of a sport as football is.” As I continued to speak with Alexis she informed me that a sports physical is required to participate. It made me question, if cheerleading isn’t a sport then why is a sports physical required to be on a high school cheer squad?…

I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. To this day, I would not even consider changing my commitment to cheerleading, for it has positively influenced my life and taught me countless lessons that will stick with me forever.…

Station Camp was five yards from the end zone when our defense flattened the running back, sending the football to the hands of the tackler. Our defense scored on that play to win the game 26-20 in overtime. The tumultuous crowd became so loud, we couldn't hear each other on the field; but truthfully, we did not need to speak. Who we were spoke so loudly that we did not need to hear each other. Numerous predictions claimed we should have lost that game alongside our already fearful fans. After losing nineteen talented starters in the class above us, an immense void was left to fill by few seniors. So why did we keep playing? The answer is that the visceral integrity ingrained within us would never allow us cease believing in ourselves and let adversity control the outcome of the game.…

This was the fifth time I caught him staring at me today! I was on the dance team at my old high school and he was the drum major. I’m used to being watched while practicing, but this seems a little ridiculous. As the band and dance team work closely to perfect our field performance, especially since we weren’t at home this week. Through my experiences in several different clubs and activities, dance is one I hope to sustain in college. Although Dance Team is the most difficult thing I have been a part of, it has also been the best and most rewarding. The five-hour Sunday practices preparing for nationals, the breathless moments after doing our pom routine five times in a row as we lay exhausted on the dusty gym floor; dance has taught me a lot about dedication and working towards my goals. Dance is all about creating a connection with your teammates and “dancing as one”, but beyond the dance-floor I have built inseparable bonds with every girl . They’re not only my teammates, but my sisters. The Dance Team will always hold my best high school memories, and I would…
