Personal Narrative: The Union And The Labor Movement
I come from a long line of union members. My grandfather was a union member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), my mother was a union member of the Communication Workers of America (CWA) and one day I may be a union member as well. The Union and the labor movement has always had some influence in my life since the very day I left the womb. The Union allowed my mother the time off to take care of me and make sure I was healthy and stable before leaving to go back to work. The union allowed my mother to work an 8 hour day with no forced overtime. They made sure every employer compensated for overtime. Employers could not overwork somebody with paying them their money. The only relationship I have with the union is

Although unions are still useful for individuals, one thing we should admit is that unions have not done a good job connecting with young workers these days. “I think unions are extremely relevant — but I don't think they are too present or prevalent when it comes to young workers,” Godoy told CBC Hamilton. “It's not necessarily on their minds.”…

I was raised in a union family but grew up to be a company man. I can see both sides and their opinions. I believe we need unions to keep the companies who are not union from treating their employees unfairly, regarding wages, days off, etc. There are good unions that are so effective and there are weak unions who give unions a bad name. Some companies will always treat their employees well and be fair but for those who don't, there has to be someone watching out for their rights. If those companies know that if their employees are treated unfairly, there is an organizer willing to step in and help, the company generally will step up to the plate and do the right thing. My father and uncles worked for the plumbers, electrical, and teachers…

My mother has worked for the (USPS) for over 35 years and after retiring in October of 2009 she left the post office as the president of the American Postal Worker Union (APWU) Local 171 Portsmouth, VA. In the 10 years she was president I have seen her go to court week after week to help every member in her union. She has stood in front of the Post Master General and argued many of cases. Seeing things like that happen made me understand that being unionized is not a way to keep people employed, it is the leading way to maintain peoples rights in the work place and give them a piece of mind.…

The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…

The three most “uneducated judgements” that I had about unions were unions are corrupt, unions are violent during strikes and The United States would be more competitive if we got rid of Unions. The perception of unions leave a strong misconception of reality. These are organizations that have the potential to do a lot of good for the employee. Having little or no contact throughout my work career with unions, I find the overall mission to be positive. This naturally would create the doubt of the unknown.…
