Personal Narrative: The Varsity Golf Team
I was fourteen years old just starting my new chapter of life at Hamilton High School. I did not really know what to expect from high school but the year started great. I was having fun in my classes and made some great friends. However, I was nervous about the Varsity Golf team tryout. I played golf for about a year leading up to the tryout not knowing what to expect. I felt like I had a really great chance of making the team and join a varsity team at Hamilton.

It was tryout week and I was very well prepared. My game was sharp and I was ready to be on that team. The week went by and I was not playing as great as I wanted to. The last day shows up and I am just a couple of strokes out of the team. I knew I had to do something special. I started out fantastic and was inching closer to the team. We came down to the last shots and I was right in it but this happened. My worst shot of the week when I needed my best shot happened on the last hole. I finished up knowing I had failed and did not make the team. I was sorrowful and depressed and did not know what to do.

I was not on the team so I could not really get good practice. I then realized that I have three more years to make varsity and I can never give up. I started working really hard and grinding out long days of practice. Ball after ball and stroke after stroke over the course of the year got me a lot better. The next year was my sophomore year and I knew this was my time. Tryout weeks started and

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” is a phrase that stays true to everyone especially during your freshman year of highschool. When I was fourteen, my baseball team went to a spring showdown baseball tournament. Spring showdowns have always been my favorite type of tournament since I played 10u travel ball. Although now I have a different perspective on these tournaments. On the way home from this particular tournament my face look like a baboons buttocks, with a big red swollen eye that was surrounded by brown and purple bruise. This was from a fouled off baseball, and I will never forget the event or the decisions I had to make. As a freshman I had to learn how to make educated, courageous, and tough life decisions.…

Whenever I meet someone new, there will come a time where they ask me, what sport do I play. I'd say golf. But why do I play this most unusual sport. Well one of the reasons why I play is because of my main golfer Tiger Woods or in other words my hero. The three points I'll talk about today are: who is he, why him and what he has done to be the best.…

As I hear those words that I most deeply despise come out her mouth, it quickly led me to think that this woman did not know what she was talking about. Before she had said these words we were talking about our favorite sports and she said hers was basketball and I told her mine was baseball. “Baseball is boring to watch,” she said. Hearing someone say this about my favorite sport that I have been playing throughout my life irritates me and it brings my attention to wonder why people find this sport boring. People similar to this woman, believe that baseball is a boring sport yet they do not realize that it is actually one of America’s most exciting sports!…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

I was seeded 7th out of 21 kids. I had to wrestle a very tough kid my first match. Considering this was my first match of the district tournament, the nerves kicked in. My full potential was not shown in my first match and I walked away with a loss. The tournament wasn’t over and I had to keep my head up even though I knew losing again wasn’t an option. After an hour or so went by, it was time for my second match. The kid I had to wrestle wasn’t ranked and had a losing record so I assumed I could win. I went in with a positive mindset and came out victorious. I pinned him with 27 seconds left in the first period. With that win, I move on to the second day of the tournament. When the first day of wrestling is over, you have to option to weigh out that night or weigh in the next morning. I really wanted to eat that night so I chose to weigh out. Little did I know I was 4 pounds over. So after an hour of running I made weight and was able to eat that night. Laying in bed that night, I knew that tomorrow could be my last day wrestling all year. I had to give it my all. The next morning, we left the wrestling complex at 5:45 so we could be there by 7. Everyone slept the whole way there. After we all checked in, it was time to start warming up. I got a good sweat going in the warm up and felt confident. At about ten o’clock, it was time for my first match. I wrestled hard and walked away with the win. If I won my next match, I was going to the state wrestling…

Later in my high school career, now bigger and stronger, I tried out for an elite summer softball team. My new coach was unlike any coach I had had before. He would scream in my face, and point out my flaws in front of the entire team. However, most importantly, he challenged me to grow as a person and to confront my biggest fear, which is failure. He pushed me to my limits, making me want to quit and wishing I had never played the game. Despite these challenges, I persevered and became mentally and physically…

I was extremely nervous despite the fact that everyone had told me I was going to make varsity since I had done so well at camp. There were about 23 people trying out for varsity and only 18 could make it and so I had a good chance at making the team but that still did not calm my nerves. Before we went out to the brand new turf field for tryouts I was psyching myself out and was doubting myself in all ways possible. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, all while listening to the calm chatter of everyone else echoing loudly in the locker room. “You can’t make varsity; the others are just too good” I was telling myself. During tryouts the pace was fast, the humidity was high, and our spirits were just as high. We had to do lots of ball work and ball skills on the first day and I was messing up completely at times. At one point I screamed out in utter anger because I just could not get my feet to do the correct things. I was so angry with myself because I knew I could do better than what I had done that day. I went home feeling utterly defeated but ready for the next day because there were two days of tryouts. The next day I felt absolutely great and I was doing everything right! I was passing every drill while receiving complements from my coaches. I felt great and as I was walking up the big, blue steps to the locker room, I knew that I had done great at…

I knew it was not the end of the world and I had to bounce back. I kept working hard and still working out and attending many practices. I kept wrestling and I got back on the right track and was wrestling and beating many good people. Then during state duals I was wrestling the same state champion that beat me earlier that season, and I demolished him this time I beat him eleven to four. Once I got to regionals I was wrestling good beat my first two opponents and then went won in the semi finals seven to one. I was in the finals I had already qualified for state I was really happy I ended up losing. When I went to the state tournament I started my first match and I lost to a kid I should of beat, but I did not give up I started wrestling through the back side of the bracket and I made it all the way to the consolation semi finals I lost to a guy I could of beat and was wrestling for fifth place. I was wrestling the kid that beat me the first match so I was nervous. I knew I could beat him I ended up beating him seven to four. The moral of this story is you can accomplish anything you want to as long as you work hard and have…

It was time to try out for the competitive team. This time I was not nervous although I was determined. The only time I remember talking to greg was before getting into the glass like water i said “are you nervous” he responded saying “not one bit.” That practice all i could hear were the coaches roaring like lions telling us the next step. Then they were reading the list of people who made it “connor hebert, sadie hebert, brandon hebert” i was ecstatic. Then it happened they called my friend “Greg Boil”. I was glad that he got on the team to because he helped me work hard and I was nice to have a friend on the…

Playing in a varsity game for the first time as an eighth grader had me scared of what the team might think of me or if they would accept me. As the last couple of hours go on, my head kept winding of all the negative thoughts that could happen if I played. Finally, 2:30 came around and the softball team was let out of school early to load the bus for the game. The bus leaves and while I am sitting, trying to get my head on a swivel, coach calls the names out the players who are starting. My name was called first. I was so pumped that I was playing against a phenomenal team. Unfortunately, one negative thought stayed in my head until I got up to bat. Before I stepped into the batters’ box, I looked at coach and I could see the confidence he…

I was so arrogant coming into that tryout like the spot on the team was already mine. That is not a very good trait to have because nothing is ever given in life; there is always someone out there trying to be better than someone else. I was so overconfident that I didn’t do as many drills as I should have, or conditioned as much as I needed too. There were people at the tryouts that could shoot better than me, play better defense, basically doing everything better than I could that day. Next time I told myself I would not…

I didn’t like it at first…
