On my way to Monticello, I saw a white ugly bus and three people with a sign saying welcome to Job Corps. I got on the bus and they introduced themselves to us. There was five people with me on the bus they gave us some snack before we
took off for the Center. On the drive there, they talked about how Job Corps is set up, what the rules were and what we could expect when we were students there. As we drove, I looked out the window and I couldn’t believe I was in the middle of nowhere. I was seeing cows, horses and a lot of animals I had never seen before! I was in the country and I was so depressed.
Finally, I arrived at the center. From the way the place looked I already hated it. They showed us around the campus, the main building and the recreation hall. We got to the dorms and it was so uncomfortable. The thought of sharing a room with four people I had just met terrified me but I had to suck it up and not let my feelings get to me. I met a couple of people that night and suddenly, I started to feel comfortable. That’s when I promised myself to stay focused and to not let anything get to me. I was going to focus and get what I came here for – my high school diploma and Job Corps completion.
