Personal Narrative: Welcome To Job Corps
It was a Thursday morning in November. I woke up, got dressed and got ready to take a taxi to 42nd Street in Manhattan with my mother. I was so upset that I had to leave to upstate somewhere I had never been and the thought of living there? Lord knows I wanted to throw up so badly. When I got to 42nd Street I saw the guy that I had an interview with. He said, “Hello Nikki. Are you excited to go to Job Corps?” I lie and said yes. When it was time to leave I said goodbye to my mother and got on the bus.

On my way to Monticello, I saw a white ugly bus and three people with a sign saying welcome to Job Corps. I got on the bus and they introduced themselves to us. There was five people with me on the bus they gave us some snack before we

A few months earlier, I was applying for the Camp Counselor job at the M.E Lyons YMCA, which would be my first job. In the beginning of the summer, I had no idea that being a counselor would be extremely challenging, but very rewarding in the end.…

A recent event in my life where I felt proud was getting enough money to help my parents pay for bills and succeed and pursue "the american dream". I started to work for HoneyBaked Ham part time since I was eligible to work. The paychecks felt great and giving them to my parents was felt better. As my sister and I get ready for college, the money got tight and I did gigs on the side. I did everything from landscaping to repairing phone screens. Felt stressful but, mind over matter right? The only thing I wanted to do that day was stay in our old house and cry because I didn’t want to leave my family at all, I was really dreading moving to Florida. It was a couple days after school had started my eighth grade year and I was standing in the Minneapolis airport with a huge sign that said Welcome Jocelyn. I had spent hours making sure that the sign was perfect: that the letters were all symmetrical and there was just the right amount of glitter and color. You are probably wondering why I spent so much time on a silly sign. But this was the first thing that Jocelyn was going to see when she stepped onto Minnesota soil. Maybe I should back up and explain who Jocelyn is first. Over the summer my family got a call asking if we would host a foreign exchange student for three months. It was a no brainer my family all agreed it would be a great opportunity plus my friend had done it the year before and we instantly became best friends with her foreign exchange student Paloma. My parents thought it would be good for my sister and I to learn about another culture first hand. While I had imagined Jocelyn and I becoming friends: going shopping together, staying up late talking about nothing in particular, tubing up at the cabin, hanging out with my friends, and playing volleyball for the crusaders. That was why I wanted everything to be perfect including the sign. I was so nervous waiting for her I watched the clock slowly tick away until it finally reached 6 oclock the time her plane was supposed to be landing. There were probably twenty other families who all waiting eagerly like me to meet the new person who would become part of their family for the next three months, so when the foreign exchange students came down the escalator there was chaos. At first I couldn’t see Jocelyn then out of the corner of…
