My greatest influences are my parents and my brother. My brother suffered from Guillain- Barre Syndrome when he was eight. He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…
I completed my Institutional Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) at Miami Valley Hospital located in Dayton, Ohio. Miami Valley Hospital is an 848 bedded hospital with several units, those of which I had the privilege of working in were the intensive care unit (ICU), the burn unit, and the behavioral health unit. I also had the opportunity to spend time in the main pharmacy as well as the emergency department. I worked with pharmacists Beth Quedenfeld, Michelle Inman, and Jen Welch along many technicians.…
An egg is a model of a human because the egg has a cell membrane like humans do inside and outside of the body that let things pass through like water. We can use eggs to study the effect of changes in the external environment on the internal environment by having harsh environments like putting the egg in only alcohol and see what happens to the inside of the egg. Diffusion is the movement of a substance down its concentration gradient from a more to a less concentrated area. Meaning if there was more oxygen on one side of the membrane and the membrane was permeable to oxygen, the oxygen would pass through to the side of less oxygen. Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Diffusion and osmosis is important for organisms because our nutrients, oxygen, and etc., need diffusion to go through compartments. I predicted that the more the concentrated the alcohol solution was the mass would increase because I thought the membrane would let alcohol through which would cause the egg to expand.…
Samuel Clemens advised “Go to bed early, get up early-this is wise”, and by appreciating the soundness of his words, rarely, if ever, do I find myself in the chaos of late morning traffic. By accomplishing little everyday small tasks such as getting up early in time for a healthy breakfast or studying in motivating environments allows me to be extremely productive and effective as a student at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). For the past seven months, I’ve held an environmental specialist internship at the Santa Rosa Water Department that goes hand-in-hand with my dedication and efforts at the junior college. Over the past two years, it has been my pleasure to participate in courses and to become a part of the SRJC culture. I am motivated and eager to continue to develop a strong background of calculus, general chemistry, biology and critical thinking, and expanding physics, engineering and organic chemistry. My overarching education goal is to receive a bachelors of science in environmental engineering or hydrologic science. My top three universities of choice are UC Berkley and Cal Poly for their environmental engineering programs and UC Santa Barbara for hydrologic…
I am the second oldest child in my house, and after my older sister I am responsible for my two other younger siblings. Therefore, most of my time I spent teaching my younger sister chemistry, and my younger brother math. I try my best to use the best way of explaining it to them. I use visual mind maps and sometimes I start off teaching my brother the basic math, so I can remind him how to solve a math problem. I find this way really helpful while I am teaching him. As well, when I am teaching my sister chemistry, I always use the strategy of asking her questions and making her explain what I am trying to teach her, and I find this way helpful for her. Now she is getting really good marks in her class, that inspires me to keep on teaching…
From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…
I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…
For my first biology test I received a grade that I am not proud of. To be completely honest the night before the test I attended a concert and didn’t get to sleep until two in the morning. This optical is defiantly something that I could have avoided. I should not have attended the concert, or at least I should have prepared myself weeks in advance knowing that I had a concert the night before. This is my second time taking the class and I expected better out of myself. I made the same mistake I did last year by not studying till the week of the test. Another obstacle was my interest, I am not interested in the topics we are discussing but as a student I need to ignore preference and work on doing my best. Most biology test is memory based…
One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…
My name is Laura and I’m a busy mom of three wonderful kids. I’m going to school for nursing and this is my first science class online. I’ve recently become a stay at home mom and I’m enjoying the change of pace. After graduating I hope to get a job where I can work a couple of days a week so I can still spend time with my family.…
On June 12, 2006, I was ready to board my flight at San Diego International airport, when I was given a once in a lifetime experience. As I began to board, the captain and first officer were greeting the passengers ahead of me. The line was moving very slowly; however, I eventually made it to the front. The captain and I began talking when all of a sudden he asked a very typical question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” I responded, “I want to be a pilot” and for no apparent reason offered to take me into the cockpit. Inside the cockpit, the captain continued to talk about the plane while pointing to instruments such as altimeter and vertical speed indicator, when I suddenly asked him, “How did he become a pilot?” He responded by saying,…
My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…
Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…
This make me a better TRIO scholar because it makes me proactive and focus on things that can benefit my future. Something like applying for scholarships and being selected for one or a few of them will help me with my financial situation. Even if I don't get any, I still tried to get some scholarships instead of not getting any at all. My takeaway from this TRIO activity is to always spent some time to do something that would affect the smallest aspects of my academic. Even getting fifty dollars would be something that would be useful in which it would help me pay a portion or a whole textbook that I need in school. Now, if I were to get two thousands dollars, I won't have to worry as much about my financial needs. I'm glad that I chose this…
I would have never expected how working in a food kitchen could teach me so much about the world around me. How easily his mood was effected by a deed I found so simple moved me. My heart weighed heavy with happiness. Giving back to the community in this way, I found, wasn’t just about the required hours I needed for National Honor Society. It changed a man’s life. My family is in a comfortable living situation, therefore, worrying about where my next meal is coming from is never an issue. I learned that what you think may be a little thing can have a huge effect. You may not know the specific role you have in your communtiy until you venture outside of your spot within the social hierarchy. This is what I would like to do at Michigan State…
