Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My English Class
Spending the last few months in this English class, I’ve realized that this was a very differently structured class than any other class that I have already previously taken. This class pushed me to step out of my comfort zone with writing, striving me to be better every day of class. From reviewing and reading my day one essay I’ve truly realized I have come a long ways away from my first day here in class, and that I have even longer ways to go getting better. I see the improvements I’ve accomplished from rereading my day one essay, going over what I’ve learned and still need to improve, and looking over past assignments the have helped me the most. My day one essay was written on my second day at Collage of the Desert, it was a nervous week of learning where things are located and getting used to collage life. Rereading this brings back all those memories of that first week. Looking at my essay now almost makes me laugh from saying how I knew MLA format so well when in reality I am finding so many grammar mistakes just by glancing over it. I feel for looking at my essay now that at the time I thought it was alright but when I look at it now I’m sad to say this paper is mine. If I were to rewrite this today, I would actually have a thesis and a MLA structure. My day one essay …show more content…

One of the items of writing I see that I’ve improved on is my MLA. When I started this class I truly thought my MLA formatting was on top of it, but I was very much mistaken. Every paper I’ve turned in class the biggest issue was MLA formatting, it was almost getting repetitive of how every time I turned in any kind of writing that required MLA, that it had major MLA issues. Even after rereading it, I still was surprised of how much I would miss. Overall what I have improved the most was my MLA, and what I still need to improve a pone is my

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

At first I thought of myself as a good writer, but throughout the semester I learned that I had a lot of improvements to make in my writing. When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

If I had a time travel machine, I would love to go back to our class’s first meeting. It was such a memorable day. I was so nervous that my first piece of writing seemed less than mediocre as I reflected on what I had written that day. While being happy that my name was randomly chosen to be added to the class, I was very scared of this class. The last time I wrote an essay was two years ago, and before this class I had forgotten how to write one. I believe good writing requires lots of practice, and I have not practiced my writing for a long time. In addition, my reading was not even up to par since I only read books required for my classes. I did not do much reading outside of my discipline, and that is not a good habit for anyone who wants to better their writing. Through this class, I figured out my composing style, which is crucial since good writers should be aware of potential advantages and disadvantages of each style. I think my critical reading skills have been dramatically improved thanks to different types of analysis frameworks I learned. As I contemplate what this class has taught me, it would probably take pages to list all the things I learned from my professor, classmates, textbook, and my work. However, the major lessons I have learned are the reading and writing strategies that help me form many good habits to become a better reader and writer.…

Overall I struggle with writing, I can never remember all of the grammar rules or sentence structure types. At the beginning of the year I relied on other people's opinions and revisions to make grammar and content corrections, but now I am able to have a stronger piece of writing and not be dependant on others. At the beginning of the year I had procrastinated so much to the point where it was the day of and I just started an essay, but currently I make sure I start a week before at minimum so I know I have time to go through the proper revision process and don't have to stress about it last minute. The op-ed and the speech helped me improve the most. The op-ed I started right when the assignment was given to me, this was the point where I…

At the start of the semester, I considered myself a good writer. I had done well in composition my sophomore year and believed that I didn’t have much more I needed to learn. However, coming into Advanced Composition, I realized quite quickly that my writing was not all I had thought it was. Compared to what Mrs. Witt was expecting, my writing was very juvenile. After the first paper, I was able to see what exactly I needed to work on, such as tying topics back to my thesis and working on writing a clear thesis. As the semester progressed, I started to improve on these things and in turn improve on my writing in general. Now, at the end of the semester I can say that I am a better writer than I was at the beginning. I am in no way an expert at writing but I at least have a better understanding on how to make a paper sound more educated and well written.…

    Freshman Year Essay

Freshman year is a year full of firsts. First year of high school, first homecoming dance, first football game, and for me, my first C on an English paper. I knew I was not a spectacular writer, but I was still taken aback. What would my parents think? I had never brought home a C in my entire schooling career. This low score was unexpected, even for my teacher, Mrs. Chen, as she informed us many of her students did poorly and offered after school tutoring for help. Concerned about my grade, I decided to attend the tutoring session. The paper was an analysis on a movie we watched in class, and I was not familiar with how to write an analysis yet. Together, we read my paper sentence by sentence, pointing out each mistake. She explained to me how I had to be more specific, as general statements do not count as analysis. I needed to include more specific details from the movie to support my theme. The skills she taught me that day have carried on with me, all the way up to my senior year.…

In my opinion, I have learned well the all concepts we have studied in this English 107 class throughout the 2015 fall semester. In this final assignment I am revising my first essay I wrote in this class. The reason why I chose my first essay to revise is because this was my first essay I have ever written in college, and now that I almost finished my first semester of college I want to look back to see what I wrote and compare myself how I improved in terms of a writer. In addition, because my major requires a lot of writing skill, by analyzing my own essay will definitely help me with my future writing assignments and career.…

Our class work and homework were both merged together with the essays. I felt like working on something at home on your own wouldn’t have been enough to learn more on how to make your essay better. Making our homework class work helped realize what would need to be fixed or corrected. A lot of the correction and problems needed to be fixed were punctuation, grammar and proper format. I had just learned about MLA 7 this semester, but the example in our syllabus was very helpful. Other than keeping the proper format, grammar…

In the beginning I found it hard to take advice and apply it to my writing, but through all the peer reviewed, conferences and revisions I was able to understand what I really had a hard time doing. Yet through the course of the semester I have been able to change that and it has made my writing better as a whole. In the first essay we turned in, I realized that I wasn’t happy with what I had wrote, which doesn’t really happen to me because I always make sure to take my time and complete an outline and at least two drafts for myself before the final, but for this one I didn’t really do that. I feel that it really affected my writing and I wasn’t truly satisfied with the work I had. Before this class, I was really confident in my writing but this semester I feel that I grew more insecure of my writing. I think that depending on the environment and the other things going on definitely affect my writing. Although, I believe that this helped me grow as a writer and assisted me in establishing where I stand in my writing process now and how I can move…

Entering my first semester of college I did not believe I could produce university level writing straight from the beginning. It turned out that I was capable of writing at an undergraduate level and it took the tremendous writing professors at holy family to teach me that. After concluding my first writing class, also known as “Writing I”, I thought I was the best writing in my class. Mr. Litten and his writing class stripped me of that belief. I do not mean that in a harmful way. Writing II challenged me at a higher rate than any previous English class. Entering Writing II after the completion of my first writing course here at Holy Family, I believed I was superb writer, yet I still processed the knowledge to be aware that I still have a large amount of room for improvement. I could…

When faced with the task of writing all the concerns I had with writing, it came across as easy to write down things I felt unsure about. When I was done, the paper was crumbled and the doubting words about my writing were thrown away…literally. I thought this assignment was a bit inane and that crumbling the paper I just spent my time working on would make me feel substandard, but surprisingly enough, I felt relieved that I didn’t have to face my concerns anymore. It made me realize that I am in this class for a reason and that I am here to work on my writing skills as an individual. If I have any problems or concerns I can contact my professor and work on the skills I feel like I am lacking.…
