“Why I Am Taking Taekwondo”
Written by Letecia Clauder

Since a very young age I had a strong desire to learn a martial art. However, I did not know which style would best suit me. I was the youngest of seven children in my family. Due to our financial instability I was unable to explore this possibility. Fortunately, at the age of nine, with coordination, flexibility, and limited training in ballet, I was accepted into the School of Creative and Performing Arts. This privilege gave me the opportunity to be exposed to some of the same disciplines that Taekwondo has to offer. Such as: self-control, patience, endurance, flexibility, and perseverance.

At this time in my life, ballet is not something that is realistic due to my own

I am not going to start this off with a quote because that's what everyone else is doing. I am Avery Peak and I hate doing things someone has already done. I like being creative in my own way, that's why I have a grain shoot for an exhaust in my truck and rolling on 37inch mud tires.…

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

Stepping into a dojo that is also used as a rec room, the smell of sweat instantly hits you like a slap in the face. The front entrance is blocked with shoes that were owned by little kids to older adults. You have to tip toe your way through the sea of shoes. You can see a big room full of karatekas, which is the Japanese term for karate students. There are several groups of karatekas all around the room and they all possess different colored belts. If you look towards the back, you can see a group of black belts on their knees surrounding a combat. One of the fighters is a sixteen year old girl named Breeanna Wade. You can see the passion in her eyes as she high kicks her opponent on the side of the head. Her opponent instantly falls to the ground, making Breeanna the automatic winner of the combat. To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

When I was in second grade I learned that I loved competing with people and being good at things. I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Focusing more on school than outside activities, I got that grade back up and I continued with my favorite sport. I love gymnastics, but I don’t let it get in the way of school because school always comes first.…

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

From the day I could walk, I was involved in sports. From playing tee-ball in the backyard with my dad when I was three, to trying three new sports as a senior, athletics have been an integral part of my life. In my elementary school days, I tried every sport that was offered through the Jefferson Parks and Recreation. This included baseball, football, wrestling, karate, soccer, and tennis. Through middle school, I dropped several of these sports to focus on my two favorite sports, baseball and wrestling. Training for these two sports never ended and most of my time was spent either on a baseball field or on a wrestling mat. Entering my high school years, baseball and wrestling were the only sports I competed in. By my sophomore year, I was…

Prior to my interview with Bryce Dreager, I thought that the career in personal training seemed fun and something of my interest. Also, I thought it would be a career where I would at least need my bachelors in science for exercise and wellness. I would really love a job where I could be comfortable and love what I do at the same time and personal training sounded like the perfect fit. Most importantly, I made the assumption that I would have to learn a lot about personal training on my own to be really good at it.…

My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…
