Personal Narrative: Why I Love Football
I was in the spotlight everywhere I went. People would always say "hi or whats up" to me. I would say that I was very well known and respected. This was all due to me playing the one sport that I loved, football. I loved this sport, it was a very physical sport with bone crushing hits and speedsters that will blow past you in a second. This was the sport for me. But on one fateful day, I went from basking in the sun, to the darkness of nights in one play due to my greed.

It was a warm, but cool October day, it was game day. It started off like any old Friday, it was the last day of school for the week. The spirits were high and that helped make the day go by faster. There were posters and banners all around the school for game day. Yeah there were other sports like volleyball and cross country, but no it was football that was the star of the day. School's out! I'm getting all padded up, ready and hungry to play today. I was such a good football player that I was a starter on both junior varsity and varsity. But on this day, I wouldn't play another snap of football for almost four years.

The game went by with no hiccups, we easily won that one. It was a blowout! I can't remember the score, I couldn't even recall how many touchdowns or sacks I had, there were too many. I had bone crushing hits on the quarterback playing defensive end and sped past defenders at running back. While I was getting ready for the varsity game, I didn't feel right, the game didn't feel right. But like they say the show must go on! It was a very slow start for us in the varsity game. We didn't even score in the first half and I didn't get a sack. I felt like I lead the team down, I was supposed to be the leader of this

On January 26th, I made a huge error in my basketball game against West Central. To anybody else, that game might have seemed unimportant- insignificant really. They were not a conference rival or a sectional team. To me however, this game was very significant because I used to attend that school. At that game, I played all of my friends from kindergarten to fifth grade. I hoped that I didn’t make a fool of myself. I hoped to do amazing so that all of my old friends would see what a great basketball player I had become. I hoped that I would make a play so amazing that everyone would remember it. While I would certainly not forget the play I made, it was not the spectacular one I had dreamed. My gym teacher- Mr. Prairie asked the class, “Who’s ready for the basketball game tonight against West Central,” and I wondered if I was. Because of my insistent worrying I could not manage to make a play through all of gym class (we were playing basketball)…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

Ever since I was the Defensive Captain of the football team every little thing I did was noticed. With the coaches working in our school, we were constantly supervised and had certain privileges other students didn’t. Before every big game I wanted to relax and focus on the game ahead, but the entire school wanted to talk to you and ask questions about what you’re going to do. In a way I enjoyed this, the pressure to step up to the plate made me feel like I had a purpose for the school. I believed in myself and knew I was capable of meeting their expectations. Their satisfaction didn’t satisfy me in anyway but seeing my hard work and dedication pay off did. I cherished the moments when the announcer would scream my number on the field after a big play. These moments were immaculate in my eyes especially in front of the big crowds. One of the tragic incidents of my…

The stands were already getting packed and the crowd getting louder as we all walked off of the buses and into the locker rooms of Doc Harris. Inside it was as quiet as a library. My teammates quickly started to strap their gear on and do what was necessary to prepare for one of the biggest games of the season. As I did the same, I thought back to that week of practice and remembered that most of the players that played varsity at my defensive position were hurt and a big part of me hoped that this would be my chance to start in my first varsity football game, a dream that had consumed my mind since the end of the previous football season.…

In seventh grade I wanted to tryout for volleyball. I was very nervous because I had never played it before. I was super happy when I found out all my friends and I made the team. We had a lot of practices in December to get ready for games in January. I was really nervous for our first game. Our first game was supposed to be right after christmas break ended, but we had a snow day so it was cancelled. I wished it hadn’t been so I could just get it over with, but i was gonna have to wait. We were scheduled for another game later that week. I woke up with a phone ringing and an answering machine saying that school was cancelled due to boiler issues. I sat in bed thinking I had once again gotten lucky and we had no game, I was wrong. We were…

It was the day that most freshmen dread, cuts day. There were many of us trying out for the JV baseball team- more people than there were positions. I could see it, I would be starting catcher on the JV baseball team. I had made it passed the first two weeks of tryouts and I was so confident that I was going to make it. That was, until on that last day of tryouts when the two coaches pulled me out of a drill and told me they wanted to talk to me.…

It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.…

While in a pregame meeting 30 minutes until the bus left, my stomach started to hurt uncontrollably.Within 10 minutes I was laying on the floor unable to cope with the pain. I knew something was serious and my parents came and drove me to the hospital. At the hospital they told me my appendix was about to burst and I would have to have emergency surgery. For the next 6 weeks I was mandated to sit out as I watched my senior season slip through my fingertips. I sat at home for the first week and reflected on how my attitude should be when I come back. I came to the conclusion I was still the leader of the team and even if I wasn’t able to play, I could still lead the team and show my commitment through continuous support. It was not easy. Watching your whole school cheer on everyone else, knowing you are the game changer sitting on the sideline because of a fluke body reaction. Through all of this I learned to fight through hard times and be positive and work hard because when I was able to return, I was more than ready. In the final game I played and my first game back, I rushed for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and led the defense in tackles. I can truly say I have never been more proud of myself and not only was it because I worked hard to recover from my injury, but because I showed my teammates that I would not give up and I would stick by them and do everything possible. It was a bittersweet feeling to leave the field for my last high school football game, but it was definitely more sweet than…

“Cameron, you can’t play football you’ll die,” My mother told me in her usual serious tone, I could always count on my mom to keep it 100% reality even though I hated it. I wanted to play football so bad for three years I've literally had dreams of me playing defensive back, my wishful position, and being able to play with my emotions and do very well. I stopped pursuing football even though deep down I was still set on football.…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…
