Personal Narrative: William Lindesay

Four years ago, I read an article about an English man who stayed in China for 20 years to throw away and recycle the litter tourists carelessly leave on the streets. This man, William Lindesay, eventually realized that he could accomplish more with a group than he could alone, so he created a volunteer group. When I read that article, I was awestruck by his fierce dedication and leadership. Immediately, I realized that I too wanted to devote my life to making a change. When I was in fifth grade, I decided that I wanted to go to MIT, Caltech, or Stanford. At the time, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, only that I wanted to make a change, like William Lindesay. By the time sixth grade started, I had a vague idea of something involving both medicine and technology. A few months later, I had a moment of epiphany: I wanted to invent a method or equipment for doctors to flawlessly measure the amount of medicine to prescribe to patients of specific conditions. Ever since that moment, I have looked for ways to get closer to that dream and now, I’m convinced that in order to succeed in anything, you have to be able to see things through the eyes of different people and learn from them. On the trip, I’ll try my best to maintain a positive and responsible attitude. If there happens to be a slightly negative atmosphere, I’ll find the source of the problem and resolve it to the best of my ability. If an argument breaks out and an adult is not available at the moment, I’ll listen to both sides of the argument and propose a solution that satisfies both sides. The trip leaders can count on me to follow directions and help keep up a light, optimistic environment so that everyone can have a great time
