Personal responsibility requires one to finally accept the truth that you are responsible for your own actions. Most of the time when mistakes are made, the initial reaction is to point a finger or find an excuse rather than accept involvement. Personal responsibility is the key to College success because at times, most students find themselves falling short of what lies in between these two. Some examples of are turning in homework assignments at the last minute, running late for class, and cramming for a test. As noted by Sullivan (2011), “Personal change also requires the right timing. Just because you do not understand another perspective or have not developed a particular skill, practice, or ability does not mean you never will (, p.27).” When an individual takes personal responsibility for their actions, it can help clarify which life goals are most important and the means to achieve college success by understanding that our values support how we go about making decisions.…

In life, we cannot rely on other people to do things for us. It is so easy to blame the people around us when things go wrong, but ultimately it is up to me to determine whether or not I will succeed in life. Everyone has goals in life, but the only way to achieve them is to be realistic and set goals for themselves. Personal responsibility is the key to personal, professional and academic success because it cannot be achieved by anyone else. We cannot decide which obstacles life will through our way, only how we respond to those obstacles. It is these choices in response to such obstacles that shape our lives and determine our ability to succeed. For that reason we must think carefully before deciding on a course of action. One should consider a course that is in line with their personal, academic, and professional goals in order to keep on track. It is my opinion that we each decide what we make out of our lives. Either we choose to use each obstacle as an excuse for failure or we can choose to accept personal responsibility, take appropriate action, and live a better life.…

What does personal responsibility mean? To me personal responsibility means that I am responsible for what I choose in life. I have to hold myself accountable and cannot blame others for the choices I make. Jake Lawson wrote on the Livestrong.com website, “Accepting personal responsibility includes but is not limited to: acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life and accepting that you are responsible for what you choose to feel or think” (Lawson, 2011). That statement is very profound and powerful. It is easy to place the blame on others but all that really does is hold us back from finding our true potential. We cannot use scapegoats to hide the fact that we possibly make bad decisions in life. Whichever direction my life heads, I am the captain of this ship and I cannot let others control what I do. I have control over my emotional responses to outside interference and must live with the consequences of my actions. In the Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 89 (Issue 4), 497-515, Dana Klein wrote ‘people are responsible when they act with the ability to do the right thing for the right reasons, or a good thing for good reasons.’(Klein, pg. 497) What exactly does that mean? It means that if we choose not to do the right thing or make bad decisions, they have not shown personal responsibility. I have to be willing to improve myself professionally, academically and personally in life. I can never be complacent or else I will never accomplish more and…

The community’s motivation is fueled by individuals who choose personal responsibility because they shine confidence and accountability wherever they go. Those who choose accountability at every turn set the example for the community because they understand that without accountability there is no trust or confidence in each other (Galindo, Linda. 2010 Leader to Leader Vol. 2010 Issue 56, page 17-20, para 4). There are many envious people in the world, but there will always be someone that will learn to go about life doing the best they can because of the impression that another person’s acts of personal responsibility has engraved in their mentality. Leading by example becomes the trend that helps others seek the development of society, becoming a larger…

Your actions in life are what separate us into individuals. This means how you are viewed by others is greatly changed by your actions and whether or not you take ownership of them. “The presentation should make clear that the responsibility for development of these competencies does not reside with faculty or administrators, but with each student. This emphasis should foster the developmental growth of personal responsibility towards self-directedness.” (Neil 2012) Although Neil was directing this towards law students, it can be carried over to all students as well. By becoming more responsible you grow as a person and will make better choices in life. For instance, in the past I have always made the wrong decisions and instead of taking ownership I blame it on others. I had no personal responsibility, and at the end of the day I felt like I was a failure because of it. I now have a good job and have started to go back to school, which makes me feel so much better about my success in…
