The social influences, spiritual authority, and bitter vengeance that Judge Danforth, Abigail Williams, and the average citizen of Salem strongly portrayed exemplifies the failure of a non-secular society and a community built on God that was destined to fail.…
The people in Salem had no manners or respect for others. The impact of poor behavior is exhibited throughout “The Crucible”.…
Suppose you are with a few of your friends and they want to go to a huge get-together, so you fall under peer pressure and tag along. You are the designated sober driver, while you are on your way to the party in your brand new car that your parents bought you, a deer runs out in front of you. Your car is totaled but you and your friends are ok. You call your parents and they freak out, saying that you are grounded until you become responsible. Who do you blame? Well, this was the question that was frequently asked during the time of the The Crucible. Having meet the characters that played a huge part in the book, John Proctor, who is a kind farmer in his middle thirties, but also a sinner because of an affair. Reverend Parris, minister of the Salem Church, who is always worried about his reputation and everything has to be about him. Abigail Williams, a beautiful seventeen year old teenager, who always thinks she is good and never the one to blame for anything. Thomas Putnam, who holds grudges and uses the Salem witch trials to increase his wealth by accusing people of witchcraft even if they are innocent. With all of the characters in The Crucible…
The Crucible was a very well written play, and gave many themes throughout its entirety. A huge theme was Integrity and Courage. People needed integrity and courage to make it through with their goodness back in the times of witch trials, and people still need it today just so their goodness survives. Many people showed their integrity and courage, but some stood above the rest. Giles Corey died a free man, John Hale stood up to the courts corruption, and then ended up leaving, Rebecca Nurse did not confess, and John Procter died with his name and goodness.…
“On matters of style, swim with the current, on matters of principle, stand like a rock,” is a quote by, Thomas Jefferson. This quote highly relates to the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, because of the daunting challenges they faced, which made them decide whether to follow what is right or wrong . The Author, vividly explains the tragic story and background of what happened during the Salem Witch Trials. Such as, hanging of innocent people, by an accusation that only the accuser can see, this is called spectral evidence. He even goes into explaining a man that is tortured by pounds and pounds of rocks placed on his chest till he could no longer breath. First, John Proctor is a well known man of the town, he is accused…
When fear grabs hold of somebody craziness erupts and there is no longer peace. When something goes wrong people tend to put the blame on anyone or anything besides themselves. In the crucible the blame is put on innocent women and this created mass hysteria and paranoia in the village. Kristallnacht was a night of violence that created mass hysteria and fear among the innocent Jews, just as Abigail did in The Crucible.…
In “The Crucible”, John Proctor expresses extreme guilt about his affair with Abigail throughout the book. This guilt leads John to confess to Judge Danforth and sets himself up for chaos. At first, he wants to expose Abigail for faking it, but he is scared because of the guilt of his affair. He realizes that in order to keep his family together, and his friends alive, he must confess about his affair before it’s too late.…
Are innocent people safe in court? Many people are falsely accused of a crime they did not commit and punished for it. What leads to this injustice? It can be because people have pride, greed, and hypocrisy driving them against others. Reverend Parris from the The Crucible had all the previous factors when he dealt with the Salem Witch Trials.…
“It is better to die with integrity than it is to compromise a principle in order to live.”…
As this is one of my favorite classes, I can remember several lessons that were entertaining this past year. One of the first materials that come to mind is when we did the presentations about whatever we wanted. A recent topic, I enjoyed was reading The Crucible as a class. I also recall finding Edgar Allen Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" amusing but slightly disturbing. The element I enjoy most about PowerePoints is researching the information. Although presenting them is something I am not inclined to doing, being allowed to select the subject of the PowerPoint was especially pleasing to me. Reading The Crucible as a class was surprisingly highly entertaining to me. I considered the various people’s perspectives, reading the lines…
The blame game is a common game children take place in. Instead of taking responsibility for their actions, they choose to try and accuse someone else, just to avoid meanile punishment. Despite their claims of being “mature”, adults exhibit this behavior as well, but call it scapegoating. But why do people do such childish things, despite being sensible? Blame shifting is done as a result of people being unable to handle negative repercussions of a situation.…
“I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free.” John Proctor committed adultery and Elizabeth, his wife, hasn’t forgiven him. The couple are just two of the characters who show why forgiveness is important in “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. Forgiveness is an important aspect in daily life, but many don’t notice why. In “The Crucible” the importance of forgiveness is portrayed by the Proctors, and Reverend John Hale.…
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “‘Tis weak and vicious people who cast the blame on fate”. This means that people blame others for something because they are so vicious that they will blame someone just to save themselves. This is exactly what many characters do in the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. The three people who are ultimately to blame for the deaths of innocents during the witch trials are Tituba, Abigail, and Reverend Hale.…
“The reputation of a man is like his shadow; it sometimes follows and sometimes precedes him, sometimes longer and sometimes shorter than his natural size.”(French proverb) Reputation is actions that follow you to whom you're known to be. Reputation can be viewed as the way you dress, the people you are associated with and sometimes people are given a reputation by the acts of the people in their family. In The crucible, reputation is an important theme because it determines one's ability to follow religious rules.…
Through my time being with the church I have never questioned or doubted the sacredness of our work once, but recently I have come to find myself realizing that the duty performed by reverends of this sanction are ill minded in determining the wrongfulness of a fellow towns member’s affairs. I am now considering leaving the church; I must record all of my reasons for doing so in this journal.…
