Cosmetologists
Do you want to look and feel beautiful? Do you want to help people make them feel better about themselves? Cosmetologists can work from head to toe depending on what you want to work on. Cosmetologists provide beauty services that include caring for the cosmetic condition of hair, skin, and nails. The field of cosmetology encompasses several occupations, including hairstylist and hairdresser, shampooer, barber, skincare specialist, and nail technician. Cosmetologists help people look the way they want and let them feel better about themselves.

vision so they can see and know what they are doing. They must have people skills to connect with the costumers. Customers may not always know what they want, you have to invite them in, and make them feel welcomed. For the cosmetologist themselves have to look and feel professional (Heos 8). Creativity is a must. Cosmetologists have to be able to help their clients select new hairstyles. Good customer service skills are imperative. Cosmetologists have to have them if they want to build a following of customers. In order to understand what their customers want, they need good listening, good time management skills to keep things running smoothly in a shop, and must be appreciated by owners as well as customers who do not want to be kept waiting. Cosmetologists spend a great deal of time on their feet. They need good physical stamina to be able to be a cosmetologists. There are also responsibilities cosmetologists are going to have. If the cosmetologist are planning to own their own shop they are going to have to make sure that they have all their bills paid, make sure the shop looks decent, have all the supplies they are going to need, and also hire other great friendly cosmetologists. If they are planning to work in someone else’s shop the cosmetologist must make sure that he/she have all the supplies they are going to need for themselves, make sure their station is clean and tidy, deal with the costumers they are going to have, and also they will need to get along with their coworkers for the costumers and themselves (“Barbers, Hairdressers, and Cosmetologist”).
To become a cosmetologist, applicants must go to school and receive training.
Cosmetologists need to attend a state-licensed cosmetology school and be at least 16 years old.
In some states, a high school or equivalency diploma is required as well. Fulltime training programs in cosmetology last approximately nine months and may results in earning an associate degree. The training does not stop there for cosmetologists. Most cosmetologists work in this field to continue to take advance courses that help them stay abreast of the latest trends. All personal appearance workers, including hairstylists, hairdressers, and cosmetologists have to be licensed. Shampooers do not need to be licensed. Upon completion of a state-approved training program in cosmetology, one must take a state-administered licensing exam. There are generally separate exams for manicurists, pedicurists, and skin care specialists. Many states have reciprocity with one another, which means that if a cosmetologist is licensed in one state they can get license in another state without taking another exam. If someone enrolls in cosmetology school they will acquire all the technical skills needed to work in this field. The possible schools for the education can be from any community college or beauty school (“Barbers, Hairdressers, and …show more content…
Cosmetologist”).
In cosmetology school, the students will need lots of supplies. For training barbers, they are going need a barber kit. A barber’s kit is likely to be very similar to the cosmetologist’s tool kit with the various shears, combs, brushes, and other supplies for cutting, coloring, and styling hair. However, a barber kit may include shaving supplies like a straight razor, safety razor, shaving cream brush, and other specialty shave supplies(“Listed of Supplies Need for Cosmetology School”).
For training nail technicians they are going to need a nail technician kit. Depending on the state’s licensing criteria, the student nail kit may include an acrylic set, hand mannequins, nail tips, disposable nail forms, toe separators, brush cleaner, manicure bowls/dishes, bond-aid clarity powder, fingernail and toenail clippers, foot file, nail wipes, cuticle sticks, and variety of nail buffers, shapers, and files. For training estheticians, they are going to need an esthetician student kit(“Listed of Supplies Need for Cosmetology School”).
The esthetician student kit’s product included will depend on which skincare brands the estheticians school is teaching to it tends to be loaded up with products like cleaners, moisturizers, and exfoliators. Esthetics students also get swabs, gloves, makeup applicators, professional makeup, and brush supplies. They may also get eyebrow tweezers, an eyebrow tool set, a lash kit, wax, cooling gel, muslin strips, and a lot more(“Listed of Supplies Need for Cosmetology School”).
For training makeup artists need a makeup artist student kit. The contents of the makeup artist kit may depend on whether they are pursuing a general makeup education or a specific makeup niche. Student makeup kits may include the theatrical makeup supplies such as spirit gum, false skin, and hair products. The makeup artist kit usually also include a variety of brushes and application pads and puffs, foundations, lining/highlighting/rouge shades, eye and lip pencils, powders, latex and stipple sponges, modeling wax and a lot more. Often the makeup artist kit comes with individual bags to organize and separate the makeup artist’s supplies (“Listed of Supplies Need for Cosmetology School”). Mannequin heads are an essential part of a student’s cosmetology kit. Mannequin heads are fitted with human hair of varying textures. These often serve as the first clients of the student offering them a chance to practice various cuts and styles. When a student begins a cosmetology course, they typically need a cosmetology textbook. The cosmetology school might supply their own set of textbooks but according to the beauty schools directory, students are well advised to purchase their own. This way the students will have a complete resource of information with them at all times (“Hairdressers, Hairstylists and Cosmetologists”).
During a typical day, a cosmetologist might perform certain duties depending on his/her specialization. They would cut, trim, shaping hair or hair pieces, apply bleach or dye to the hair or hair pieces. They also might style hair or wigs by brushing, combing, spraying, or attaching wigs or hair pieces to model heads to massaging and treating client’s scalps. Some might advise patrons to seek medical treatment for chronic or contagious scalp conditions. Recommending and applying cosmetics, lotions and creams to patrons. Cosmetologists also remove facial hair using wax, thread or tweezers and shape and color eyebrows or eyelashes. Some cosmetologists clean, shape and polish fingering nails and toenails. The last thing a comsetologists will do is update and maintain customer’s information records. While they are doing all the stuff, they have to wear a cosmetology belt. A cosmetology belt holds items such as sheers, clippers, rollers and other accessories a comsetologists might need in hand. The cosmetology belt wraps around the waist and keeps the items close and organized. When working as a cosmetologist the possible work places they can work that are by owning a business or profession work. Many jobs are part-time positions. Hours typically include evenings and weekends because that is when clients are available. Self-employed cosmetologists usually work long hours (“Barbers, Hairdressers, and Cosmetologist”). Salon managers purchase and oversee the stock of supplies, make sure equipment is operating properly, set appointments, keep financial records, and ensure that the salon meets legal regulations. Salon owners may employ other cosmetologists or perform all the work in the salon. The owner oversees the business, assuming a great deal of risk and responsibility but possibly making a sizeable profit. Cosmetology or barber school instructors teach at cosmetology and barber schools and vocational training schools. These positions typically require experience in the profession, along with a general education that includes some college (“Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmetologist”).
There are certain words cosmetologists are going to have to learn and know. These words are the most important words booth, electrolysis, first chair, pedicure, rods and skin peel. A booth is a workstation in a beauty shop, usually consisting of a chair, countertop, mirror, small table and a sink for shampooing. Electrolysis is the use of electricity to remove whiskers, scalp hair, body hair, moles, warts and birthmarks. First chair is the chair nearest to the door of a barber shop, a workstation usually reserved for barbers with the highest skills and seniority. Pedicure is a procedure having to do with the feet, such as filling and polishing the toenail. Rods are special curlers, particularly those used to set permanent wave or curls. Skin peel is the application of a mild solution, such as acid from fruit juice, to remove dirt and dead skin cells and to encourage the growth of new, fresh skin cells (“Barbers and Cosmetologists”).
Cosmetologist and other personal appearance workers held about 628,000 jobs in 2010. They typically work in hair salons and barbershops, although there are those who work in spas or resorts. Some cosmetologists are self-employed. Those who are either lease space in salons or own their own shops. There will be job opportunities available in cosmetology over the next decade. Overall employment of barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers is projected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2020, but the amount of growth will vary by specialty. There will be strong competition for jobs in upscale salons. Cosmetologists earned a median annual salary of $22,700 a year and median hourly wages $10.91 in 2012 (“Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmetologist”). There are benefits to being a cosmetologist. The benefits include the freedom of being an entrepreneur who can choose his/her own schedule. Another benefit would be that the cosmetologist’s income can reflect the quality of his/her work. Finally other benefits include earning commissions, avoiding working in an office, working with celebrities, and doing what they love to do (“Heos 25”).
As upcoming cosmetologist can see, it is going to take a lot of time and effort to go where they want to be.
Cosmetologists helping people well let them feel better about themselves and the cosmetologist will also feel good for making the costumers happy. Cosmetologists can help people look and feel the way they want about themselves.
