4. I identified my ideal job situation which is at a local community mental health center and wrote my cover letter and resume.
● How comfortable are you with this decision?
I am very comfortable with my decision to be a community counselor that attempts to solve widespread community problems that are social or psychological in nature. Also, being a counselor allows me to work with individuals as well as the community as a whole. As I explained above I like to interact with people, I enjoy helping others, I am a good listener …show more content…
and have overall great communication skills. I believe being a counselor one needs all these tools and I have them.
● Draw timelines for your career. Where do you see yourself in five years? ten years? How do you plan on getting there? What are some of the potential barriers that you believe you will face as you pursue this plan? What steps might you take to overcome these barriers?
In five years, I hope to finally be working as a licensed community counselor in my home town, having completed my bachelors in psychology, my masters in mental health and my 2000 required hours.
In ten years, I hope to have become an experienced counselor who can go on from working at a clinic and do private practice. Some of the potential barriers that I think I will face will be working for a boss and interacting with all different kinds of people that I am not used to working with and that are very different than me. Some of the things that I will do to overcome any challenges I am faced with is to keep focused and have a positive attitude and constantly remind myself what my goal of counseling is. In addition, I will try to surround myself with positive minded people, I won’t give up on what I am trying to accomplish, I will change my perception towards challenges if need be, and will continuously believe in myself and not stop.
● Look at the career that you are currently considering. What skills do you need to develop this career? How will you develop these skills? What skills do you already have that will be suitable for this career? Explain.
Looking at the skills needed for my career in counseling some of the most important skills are having empathy, being a good listener, having social and communication skills, and being a critical thinker. I believe I have all these skills already, but one can always improve. The way I hope to continually develop my skills further would be by practicing them in my personal and work life and by talking to others in the counseling field in addition, to reading specific books related to these
topics.
