A famous boxer and practitioner of peaceful resistance to laws once refused to join the draft for the Vietnam War. Muhammad Ali knew that he was violating the law, but he did not perpetuate that he was above the law; he knew the consequences and was fully prepared to accept them. He was arrested and convicted to 5 years in prison, and he underwent years of public backlash against his decision. However, it was the same war that caused the downfall of Lyndon B. Johnson, who-once revered and respected for his work in social programs to help his country-became bombarded with mockery and a daily dose of “Hey hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?”…
In the play, Romeo and Juliet , by William Shakespeare, words can have a big impact on the actions of a character. For instance, Tybalt swore he would have vengeance on Romeo. Also, Mercutio insults Tybalt causing someone to die. Lastly, Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him and juliet. Every example given, has an effect from the words said in those scenes. Those effects can vary from a happy event to a dismal incident.…
Communication is ability to pass and receive messages to and from other people. Since the very beginning people were trying to communicate and improving ways to communicate to each other in order to be understood.…
I have been told that I can’t do certain things and have been called names that attack where I come from, although these negative comments have certainly slowed me down, they haven’t stopped me. Society throws many messages at young Latinas such as myself, telling us that we can only have certain careers or that we cannot have high positions in society. I’m truly blessed to be able to attend a school where teachers, classmates, and friends motivate me to do whatever I want to do with my life. I owe it all to my parents for taking me out of a dangerous city where I would have been surrounded by drugs and violence, and could be attending, Richmond High. Without the education I have been receiving all my life, I most likely would not believe that I have the ability to pursue any career: I am the driver of my own future. I choose if I want to make the wrong turns, but a I can also follow the right path. Although at times I may fall off onto the side of the road, there will always be individuals there to help push me back onto the road…

Growing up in a community that is mostly Hispanic creates a type of shield, not allowing for different cultures or ethnicity to diversify the community. A Hispanic family living in such an isolated community takes a toll on the way we view the world. This environment has indulged my curiosity. Being the second youngest sibling of my family of seven has allowed me to learn from my older brothers, and have the privilege to be a leader to my little brother and serve as a role model to him. Though none of my family members went to college, and my parent’s highest education being a high school diploma, it hasn’t discouraged me to follow their footsteps, but rather give the encouragement to dedicate myself to be the first generation and in my whole…
As a first generation U.S-born Hispanic in my family, I have been able to appreciate the obstacles that many Hispanic families endure. Being Hispanic allowed me to understand and experience the common struggles and differences within my community. Within my own family, I was able to witness difficulties with language barriers and English reading competencies. Regular, simple tasks such as filing applications, writing and understanding college admissions seemed complex and time-consuming for my parents. It was through observing their struggle which formulated my sentiment that education is the key to succeeding and overcoming disparities, such as low socio-economic status. In addition, this further allowed me to have a greater appreciation for educational attainment and advancement. Being Hispanic enabled me to relate to many other Hispanic individuals and their families.…
I grew up in a typical Mexican household in southwest Detroit, and it was not until recently when I became aware of what this meant. Being a Latino student in this country means I am not expected to make it far; it means the higher success I reach in academia, the lonelier I will become. “A Mexican boy, from a dirt-poor village, from Detroit, go to college? HA. Good luck with that.” These discriminatory ideas that society tries to implant in me only strengthen and encourage me to strive for greater success. I am proud to say that breaking stereotypes has become a hobby for me. I am at the top of my class, an active member of my community, have leadership positions in several organizations, I perform professionally in a cultural band, and I even compete in soccer year-round. While people of my background are consistently trapped at the bottom of the social hierarchy, I am proud of who I am and I would not change it for the world. My low socioeconomic status and the racial marginalization I suffer in this country has made me the vibrant young man I am today and formulated my long-term goal to rid my family from the shackles of…
Over the years I have repeatedly proven my dedication to my success and will continue to do so throughout my life. I consider myself to be an individual who has, despite limited resources managed to become one of the top students of her graduating class. Having immigrant parents, I translated for my parents constantly and was the only one capable of filling out important documents due to my parent's inefficiency in the English language. Everyone has had different struggles but we all seem to develop differently within these hardships. With these different stories, one can create a powerful diverse environment bringing beauty and recognition to all those involved. This is my life story……

When I first started training to be a nurse, my most compelling reason for peruse in the career was to care for the sick. Now that I am approaching the end of my three years of training my rationale has changed, I now want to empower patients in regards to their own health, supporting families in need, care for the ‘sick’ child and make a difference amongst as many people as I can.…
In my high school career I had attended a total of two high schools, both very different and both very important in helping me see the world the way that I do today.…

I am personal. This is a statement that is very personal. If you see this, you are looking at my personal statement. How dare you do such a thing! I do not think you should look at someone else's personal statement, unless you have his or her permission. However, you are looking at my personal statement now, and obviously I did not give you permission to do so. It is unforgivable. Nevertheless, I forgive you all for looking at my personal statement. After all, this statement is not very personal at all. At least, I get to say whatever I want to say. Peace.…
My name is Asfar Rashid. I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. My mother Asma Rashid , and my father Asgar Rashid were excited to have me as their first child. Happiness could breathe throughout the family. I was given the green signal by the Nirupama Hospital in Dhaka that I was born as a healthy baby and, therefore needed no special treatment. I spent my whole childhood in the crowded city of Dhaka with my parents and family. As I grew up my parents became my first teacher in life guiding me through the process of learning manner and respecting elders. The biggest lesson which I received from my father was that to never give up because everyone is blessed with a special gift from Allah and if we use it to our advantage we can conquer any difficult situation. Throughout my school life I changed five schools but settled to one when I was in grade two. I was admitted to Playpen school which was located at a posh location at the capital city of Bangladesh. There I met my childhood friends who till date are in great touch. That school was the path to my humble achievements till date. They taught me the essence of life and value of education.…
