Dan Pugh – Activities Officer Manifesto.
My name is Dan Pugh and I am studying Psychology and Marketing as a joint honours. I have always been motivated to get involved as much as possible with university life and in second year I acted as the Marketing Coordinator for Aberystwyth Cycle Festival. Following this position I became the social secretary for Aberystwyth University Football Club, which I have been an active member of throughout the last three years. I believe that the combination of my previous experiences alongside my degree has lead me to develop the required skills and attributes to make me a perfect candidate for the role of activities officer
My main aim as activities officer would be to provide every student
with an experience that they will never forget during their time at Aberystwyth. Being part of a club or society is huge part of your university life and it is therefore important that this opportunity is as enjoyable as possible. Given the opportunity I would build on the current foundations of Team Aber to make sports clubs even more unified and create a greater university spirit. This would be achieved through the promotion of joint socials and more regular events for all clubs throughout the year including a weekend to invite back the old boys and old girls from every club.
I also want to unite the union with sports clubs and societies so that it becomes a more enticing venue that will cater to student’s needs. The union has the ability to sponsor clubs and so far people do not take full advantage of this. This increased involvement will raise awareness of the union as a social place and therefore its popularity will grow, especially on Wednesday nights.
Furthermore I feel passionate about the place societies have within university life and feel they are often overlooked and this is definitely something that needs to change. I pledge to adapt sports week so that it is possible for societies to get involved and showcase their benefits to new students. This would be achieved through an ‘activities week’ where both sports and societies are involved in a larger and more integrated event.
I also believe that currently many clubs and societies are not given the access to facilities needed. This may be provided through a practice room with needed apparatus or somewhere for societies to perform all year round. If elected I pledge to make clubs and societies aware of usable free space each week with an easy to use booking system. This will increase the potential for student activities and utilise all of the facilities provided by the union.
If elected I will strive to ensure that all these pledges are fulfilled to the best of my ability using all of my personal assets and the knowledge I currently hold about the university.
