Personal Statement For Mental Health Nursing
My passion to study mental health nursing came from my experience of working with those suffering from a variety of mental disabilities at Mencap- I currently volunteer here every Tuesday evening, it is a social club and I support the staff and stimulate their minds with various activities such as table tennis, net ball, drawing and football. The people at the club really enjoy this and it gives them a chance to socialise with others. Although not all of these people have mental disabilities it has given me the experience of working with vulnerable people and taught me how to be compassionate and empathise. These experiences have given me a real and practical understanding of the challenges of the mental health nurse’s role. I have also done …show more content…
I raised the money for this charity by selling cakes at my brothers swim club.

I have struggled trying to get experience in mental health within the hospital due to the type of environment it Is, however I wanted to get experience of what it’s like to work in a hospital environment as this is where I ultimately see myself in the future working for the NHS. To do this I filled in a number of placement forms for the hospital and got a one week placement on the x-ray department. This experience has made me aware of how nurses must always pay attention to detail and administer treatment to the very highest of standards and how stressful and demanding the job can

Secondly because I know it’s a financially rewarding and secure career where there are many employment opportunities for graduates in both the NHS and private sectors.

Throughout school I have always tried to get involved with activities and make the most of the opportunities given. Last year I participated in a first aid training course, I feel that completing this course gave me the confidence to help those in need under pressure. In year 11 I became I member of the school council, this meant that I got the chance to voice other people’s opinions and made me more confident with public speaking

I understand that nursing can be a very demanding profession however I feel it can also be a very satisfying one where you have the chance to enhance people's lives during their times of need. After all the hard work I put into my diploma health and social course and sub- diploma medical science and meeting deadlines I look forward to being rewarded with an exciting career that will give me excellent benefits, flexible places to work and plenty of opportunities for

Aspects of my duties included verbal and physical communication with the residents, which is an important part of developing relationships with them. This perspective really attracts me to nursing and I feel my calm and caring nature is a quality which people can respond to and find comforting. My time working in the care home also taught me how to work well in a team with colleagues and made me appreciate how important it is to follow instructions from senior staff. This recognition will also be a valuable quality as a nurse as it will be necessary for me to realise my role within the group of health professionals and to use my communication skills to work alongside others, to determine what level of care is most beneficial for a patient. As my second work experience location, I chose a butchers so I could ensure that I'm not squeamish and am comfortable around blood. During my time there, I was assured that I have no problem with the sight of blood, organs or body…

I have always been interested in psychology and the study of human behaviour, particularly as it relates to mental illness. I did psychology both for A' Level and for my degree, and I particularly enjoyed the aspects of the courses relating to the understanding and treatment of mental illness. When I left university in 2007 with an upper second class degree, I did consider pursuing a career in clinical psychology but decided at that stage to pursue full-time employment instead of engaging in further studies. Having worked in an office environment for a number of years, I have realised that I would prefer to be working in a more rewarding role and I believe I can find this in mental health nursing. I have a passion to provide care and support to those with mental illness, to get them to better health, and a desire to help address the stigma that is still often attached to mental illness. I have had extensive discussions with two of my friends who have undertaken nursing degrees and feel I would be energised by the challenges of the role i.e. working long hours in a demanding setting, to tight deadlines, and in a constantly changing environment.…
