Personal Statement: Gymnastics
I greatly enjoy school because I like learning disregarding of my strengths and weaknesses. I take tremendous pleasure in reading. Additionally, I like to participate in hobbies outside of school such as gymnastics. In school, I typically do well with staying focused and using my planner. I like to track all of my homework to make sure all of my assignment are in on time. Although I try to do the best I can, I could work on speaking up, participating in class, and asking questions if I have them. I am an introvert, and often struggle with these skills. Outside of school, I do a lot of gymnastics. I have been in gymnastics for 8 years and still love it. Gymnastics does take away many of my study hours. It can be frustrating, but has taught me

Before I was old enough to comprehend the impact that school would have on my behaviors and habits, I thought of school as a wonderful place to play with my friends and read stories filled with thousands of different adventures. Thinking back, those early days were the beginnings of the shaping of my personality. I was able to think for myself and enjoyed being able to present my true self in my writing, as I was a shy and awkward child. In my multiple stories that I wrote, I almost…

Female athletes are among the most at risk part of the population for developing an eating disorder or patterns of disordered eating behaviors (Hausenblas & Carron, 2002, p.65). Added to the general populations definition of the ideal body, female athletes must attain the ideal shape their specific sport requires. Aesthetic sports such as gymnastics, figure skating, and dance require women to wear limited clothing and have set rules as to what the athlete should look like. The focus of this research will be on former female gymnasts, more specifically, former Division 1 collegiate gymnasts and their patterns of disordered eating. The prevalence of…

Academically, school has been “a breeze” for me. Academics is not something I have much trouble in. I do not have to put in a lot of effort into school to do well, although if it were required of me, I would do so. I am not lazy or passive with my education. Rather, I put in the effort required of me.…

Since last year I donned a cap and gown of my alma mater's colors and said goodbye to my undergraduate career. Although graduating was a joyous and momentous occasion, the first few words on the letter from the admissions office quickly humbled me. However, this setback reaffirmed my passion for people and my fascination with the human body, and I knew I had to fight harder. It was quite unusual but in my moment of discouragement I found solace in a silly movie quote. Rocky Balboa screamed at me, “It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." My dream is to help encourage patients who have been knocked down by life and bring them transformation through movement. What better way to embody that spirit than to get up and fight after experiencing a set back myself. In hindsight, I am thankful for how events unfolded.…

What if people lived healthier lives, practiced preventive medicine, and took precautions against illness and disease? My days in the physical therapy department often made me think about the prevention of injuries as well as the injuries themselves. I was already doubting my future career choice as a physical therapist. Although I loved the science of it and helping people, the lack of variety within the field and its limited options for growth bothered me. I needed a career that helped a large number of people, emphasized prevention and primary care rather than tertiary care, and would continually challenge and motivate me to improve. Knowing that I really did not want to pursue physical therapy as I had originally planned, my thoughts wandered to the area of public health, particularly health management.…

While I was participating in the athletic training clinics, I had a very interesting, educative experience. There were many different parts that I enjoyed while engaging in the athletic training clinics. One of things I enjoyed about being in the clinics was being able to talk to the different athletic training students and preceptors; as well as, seeing them utilize their skills they had learned from their pervious classes and preceptors. It was also enriching to be able to watch a patient improve over time through the various techniques used such as stretching, taping, and exercising. Further, I saw many different injuries that consisted of both the upper and lower extremities of the body.…

Courage is defined as possessing or characterized by courage; brave. I think I am courageous because I do gymnastics. You have to be very brave to go onto a beam the is only 4 inches wide. Also to do all the flips, the people in the olympics make it look so easy but it is not easy to just jump and twist and hope you land it perfectly. Next is all the injuries. Gymnastics is easily one of the most dangerous sports. In the Olympics a male gymnast broke his shin because he landed wrong. You have to be pretty brave to even do a back handspring which is one of the basic skills in gymnastics. You have to trust yourself and if you don't, then you are not very brave or courageous. I trust myself so that is why I think I am courageous.…

If I was ever feeling down, I could look at that medal and immediately have that feeling again. Today, I have so many things that I do that are not very easy. I coach gymnastics, I am in dance, every summer I do a mission project with my church, and then I of course have school. Through gymnastics I have seen things that everybody does a little different. When I see someone achieve something that will lead to bigger things in life, all I can think is “Wow. They should get a medal for achieving that.” I think this because in gymnastics, medals are not earned at the competition. They are earned during practice. So when I see people do something big, and I know that they have been working so hard for it, I think that they should have earned something…
