Growing up, my family had a solid health history, sure we had the usual bumps and bruises and a few broken or sprained limbs from our rambunctious explorations on our farm, until the faithful night when my uncle had a meltdown and trashed the kitchen.
This behavior defied the fun-loving atmosphere that had up to that point characterized my childhood. Despite our curious and frightened stares, there was no discussion or explanations on the frailty of his mind, it was an unspoken understanding that we had bridged that consciousness. What appeals to me is the fact that once a disease is identified there is a course of action to treat, control and eradicate/minimse its reoccurrence. This proactive and preventive approach is what intrigues me. Public Health is constantly evolving as new research is conducted and new ideas come to the fore. It provides enough challenge to keep me engaged and motivated as you are of constantly engaged in thought process and continued development. As with marketing, where you first critically analyse a new trend or product, conduct the necessary fieldwork an research though surveys, interviews and or focus groups, analyse the results, then develop a new product or marketing strategy to respond. Being a member of theLions Club has allowed me to interact with a large number of patients who were relatively poor and less educated. It is obvious that to me that most of the healthcare challenges this population faces could easily be solved by a vibrant well designed public health program. Tons of ideas came to mind, with fewer opportunities to implement. This is where the Utech MPH will add value to my growing passion. Knowing rigorous research has to be done to formalize these raw ideas into strategic policies.
A career in public health opens the door to diverse opportunities in a variety of sectors such as federal, private and non-governmental organizations. Because of their "big picture" perspective, public health experts play a key role in emergency preparedness and response.
