DIPLOMA LEVEL 2 (Semester 2)
PROJECT 2: FIGURES & GESTURES - BODIES AT REST
Duration: 4 Weeks (Week 10 - Week 13)
OBJECTIVES
Thematic Objectives:
To stage or to discover a situation where you can observe 1 or more persons resting/sleeping/napping/dozing.
To create a narrative about the person/s resting with the space that he/she/they were located.
To focus on the restful/meditative/uninhibited/spontaneous gestures of the resting figures.
Technical Objectives:
To use mainly INDIRECT PAINTING such as Pointillism, Erasure, Glazing and Scrumbling as techniques to create a narrative about the bodies within the space for the composition.
To investigate how the application of paint and the reaction of the medium with one other produce a narrative about the figure/s in the space or a narrative about the psychological, emotional or physical state of the bodies.
To further consider the frames of the stretcher and how it adds on or extends the visuality of the image you position within the canvas. In other words, how does the frame lead one to look at the figures in the painting?

It can also be observations of your own family members or yourself at home or in bed.
No matter which type of individuals you decided to focus on, the next step is to decide if you are able to capture/document these individuals in restful positions spontaneously. You have to be strategic about when you want to go to document these people, and also sensitive to the type of space you had chosen. You may also decide to stage your figures. In both cases, you need to make extensive observation and
