In 1775, the Congress printed “continentals,” a paper note that was printed in massive quantities that led to rapidly accelerating inflation, causing them to go out of commission. Later, in 1791, at the urge of then Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, the Congress established the First Bank of the United States, which became the largest company in the nation. The political climate was inclining towards the idea of a central bank again in 1816, so by a narrow margin, the Congress managed to charter the Second Bank of the United States. However, later, Andrew Jackson, an anti-central-bank man, was elected in 1828, and he vowed to stop it. From 1836 to 1865, state-chartered banks and uncharted “free banks” roamed the nation, issuing their…

Daniel’s parents, Calvin and Jewel, are hypocritical people. Daniel’s parents pretend to make “a lot of hard decisions” (3). However, the “hard decisions” are not hard to make. Instead, they have planned these decisions on purpose to get a fortune. Calvin and Jewel made a “hard decision” to persuade Daniel’s grandmother to move to a nursing home. As a result, Calvin successfully “convinced her to relinquish control of a surprisingly large financial portfolio to her son” (3). Calvin finally got a good fortune from his mother which gives him a great benefit by selling his mother`s house and managing her accounts and investments even if “after deducting the cost of her maintenance and his related expenses” (3). For Daniel’s sister`s death, Calvin and Jewel “lamented” (3) for deciding not to proceed with another operation to save her life. However, when they tell Daniel about his sister`s death, “their faces flushed from exertion and relief, the way they always looked after completing strenuous tasks like house-cleaning or sex on Sunday morning”. The facial emotions show that they have decided not to take such a heavy burden even if it is their daughter. The relief of their…

Communication is a fundamental part of working in a professional environment. Without proper communication, nothing will get done. Outside the Lens is a very collaborative and communicative company as is the work the students the students do at Muirlands, so I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have good communication and understanding. It’s also important to self-advocate for yourself otherwise you won’t accomplish anything you want. My mentor has always left room for self-advocacy by telling me to let him know if there was anything specific I wanted to learn, or focus on. I’ve felt confident enough to speak up whenever there’s something I want and that’s helped me out while working on my project. While editing I decided I needed more…

The story “Country Lovers” captured my interest in this week’s reading assignment. Nadine Gordimer the author was born and raised in South Africa, an activist who dealt with racial inequality, especially the Apartheid in South Africa. In the 1991 Gordimer won the Nobel Prize for her literature. Country Lovers is a short story about a forbidden love that occurred in South Africa. The poor female character suffered because of the color of her skin. However the white privileged male was not punished for his role in the story. Gordimer wrote this story to enlighten the prejudice that occurred in the 1900’s. In this paper, I will describe what the theme is and identify how the point of view and the setting contribute to the theme. Without these components “Country Lovers” one reading the story would not be able to experience the true feeling of being treated different because of color, gender or social status.…

Couples destined for doom - Romeo and Juliet, Orpheus and Eurydice, Winston and Julia. In Ernest Hemingway’s “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” Margot and Francis Macomber prove they also fall under this category. However, the two Macomber’s exemplify an uncommon trait in “star-crossed lovers” - long-lasting nonexistent love. In fact, Francis and Margot’s marriage exists and continues solely for the advantages that come from it. Margot stays with Francis because he has “too much money for (her) to ever leave him” (11). She uses Francis’ wealth to keep up her status as a “well kept woman of the beauty and social position,” proving that her matrimony is not because of an attraction to her spouse (1). Francis stays with Margot because she is “too beautiful for…

Her family had to work hard in order to survive on a extremely low income. Her mother, Katie, had to clean on her hands and knees in order to pay for rent for their tiny home. Their father, Johnny, was a singing-waiter and he did not bring in much income since his line of work was not very steady, but he managed to contribute some money. On Saturdays, Francie and her brother, Neeley, sold junk that they collected throughout the week for a few pennies. By saving their money and spending it wisely, they managed to get by every year. Even though they didn't have much money, they liked to enjoy some luxuries occasionally. Katie Nolan always poured Francie coffee even though she never drank it and it always ended up going down the drain anyways. Every time her sisters gave her a lecture about wasting things, Katie always explained why she still poured Francie coffee. ““I think it's good that people like us can waste something once in a while and get the feeling of how it would be to have lots of money and not have to worry about scrounging”” (Smith 12). Even though Francie grew up living a hard life, she had a lot of fun. In a conversation between Francie and Neeley, they expressed how much fun they had despite the hard…

When looking into works of literature, some works can seem to be similar or they can seem to be very different. Stories can have a similar setting, point of view, theme, or sense of language and style. However, all of these points could be very different as well and could cover different theme or style. In “Good Country People” and “Everyday Use” these stories have contrasting some elements, such as their points of view and use of symbolism, while their similarities in the underlying theme and the setting of these stories reveal a much stronger comparing between the two.…

Personal wealth and a responsible life would seem at first to fall on the positive side of things when judging an individual. This holds true in Tobias Wolff's, “The Rich Brother.” Still, Wolff wants us to delve further and look past the obvious into the relationship of Donald and Pete, two brothers that in many ways are dependent on one another. “The Rich Brother” is a Cain and Able story of sibling rivalry that uses contrasting characters to question the meaning of success.…

In class we have been discussing the analogy of perspectives. A perspective is a way of seeing, also thought of as a ‘point of view’. This mental view or outlook can both enhance and constrain how we view the world in our own eyes. In the field of psychology and sociology there are many ways to perceive our world in which we live. No one perspective alone can define the world. Each perspective has its own distinctive strengths and blind spots. In class we have discussed different theories and analogies to better understand the complexity of perspectives.…

By using paradox, Kincaid is able to make the reader stop and reflect about how little the Antiguans realize about the world they are living in. “no excess of love which might lead to things that an excess of love sometimes brings,” suggests that people in Antigua are living in a delusion where they are constantly lied to. However, Kincaid sees past the illusion and is able to feel the necessity of language and culture to feel completely free.…
