Only two percent of students graduated from the 2009 freshmen class in 2011. So out of 2,011 students who enrolled that year, forty-eight graduated in the expected two years! Students can also save up to nine hundred and sixty one dollars by doing so. All the student has to do, Is focus on graduating on time and finishing a two-year school, in two years! All the information provided in this essay comes straight from the Union Count College’s fiscal report. Most students pay out of pocket and should want to graduate on time. The question is why aren’t students graduating on time and how is Union County College can fix this? A method by UCC, which is going to be delegated through me, is the promotion of taking more than fifteen credits. If the average student takes at least more than fifteen credits they will graduate in two years.
First of all since half of the Students at UCC go part-time, means only half of the students enrolled are already projected to graduate on time. In the fall of 2012, 6,260 out of 12,146 were part-time students. The lesser half of that pie, 5,886 students were going full-time, but not all of those students were taking at least fifteen credits. So more than seventy-five percent of these students are already out of the race to graduate on time. Due to the amount of credits the average student is taking, more than half of the students enrolled in UCC, will not graduate on time.
Furthermore three out of five students at Union County College pay out of pocket or are receiving a loan, which they have to eventually pay back with interest. The Other two out of five students get grants and scholarships from different sources. A student who pays out of pocket or has a loan that takes eighteen credits can save almost $4,000 dollars on their tuition by the time they graduate or transfer to a four-year school. Some students might not be able to handle this for personal reasons, but if a student took just five classes, which is fifteen to sixteen credits they would save nearly $2,000 dollars on tuition, when the student graduated or transferred. All a student has to do is take more than fifteen credits; it will save students thousands of dollars on tuition.
In spite of all the money students can save by taking at least fifteen credits, they will not. Students say their life is “too busy” or they need time to think about their major. Life can be very stressful and struggling, many have been there. Although there is no excuse for a person to blow off their education, because it is a very important to be educated if that person ever wants to be successful. However, unless the person is under extreme circumstances, for example has multiple kids and is a single parent, then it is understandable, but for the average student that is not the case. Students sometimes can also be just undecided; many have been in that position. Best thing to do is to take the required courses or electives towards your interested career to get a feel for that field and to get the pre-requisites out of the way. Whether a student is “too busy” or undecided, the average student does not have a valid excuse to not take at least fifteen credits.
In conclusion, stop procrastinating and stop wasting money. Students need to buckle down and acknowledge that education should be a top priority. Students will not only graduate on time, but they will save thousands of dollars! If students do average things, they will be an average person. If students put the time and effort no one else will, they’re going to get farther in life. Students need to start changing their actions, or just get used to being mediocre forever.
