Having a baby changes a multitude of things such as your body, your time and your ideas of what’s acceptable. This definitely comes into question when other people around take offense to a necessary and natural action. One that has been raising eyebrows and voices is the act of public breast feeding. While breasts are seen on billboards and art, their born use for feeding a baby is not only frowned upon but has been exiled in the American mind as natural. It's almost as if we have sexualized breasts so much that their main role is no longer allowed. Breastfeeding in public has led many women to do a double take at actions so extreme as forcing a breastfeeding woman to vacate a public bus. So why are people so offended by this? The ideals that we have created as a society for new mothers by criticizing them for breastfeeding in public is not only is unnecessary but also unrealistic.
Having a wardrobe malfunction to most women is absolutely terrifying. It happens everyday in magazines or on T.V. The traumatizing embarrassment that follows after the accident seals the deal as a woman's worst nightmare. Having someone see your breast or even too much skin in public is something to always avoid and yet, grown women are doing just that! According to members of the INFABIO team that did a study comparing maternal behavior of breastfeeding in public “Women embarrassed at the prospect of breastfeeding in public often will confine themselves to home, or attempt to restrict their movement and the length of time they are away from home, to avoid breastfeeding in public”(Scott,82). The results of this according to the study can lead to depression and often times mothers find it too difficult to go out. In an article written by Stan Tian, she expresses the importance for women to go out after giving birth. “Many women
