Breed discrimination has been going on throughout history; in fact, it is not different from the discrimination that human beings have fought over for over thousands of years; the only difference is humans find animals not a truly worthy cause to stand for. No one knew his real name nor did we know if he could have had a family that wanted him or had loved him. What we do know is that this American Staffordshire Terrier mix, what an untrained eye would call a Pit-bull. This all white, but for the brown spot on his eye and another on his opposite ear had a pathetic puppy's life. You see, this “pit bull” was originally a bait dog, he was chained up to a pole with a choke collar, which broke his larynx so, now he sounds like a Chihuahua more than a 100lb bull terrier. He was lucky, though. Rescuers took pity and decided he was worth stealing from the dog fighters. usual atrocities), emotional and physical. He survived that, just to go to a rescue that could not help him and almost euthanized him just because he is an emotionally scarred Pit-Bull.
Throughout history, the dog’s job in life was to give their lives for the livestock, the owner’s life, to pull sleds and the list can continue from there. Websites and documentations have described lifestyles that were truly deplorable for these animals to live in.
According to an article on the “11 Riskiest Dog Breeds for Homeowners and Renters” by Catey Hill, contributor for Forbes, those breeds consist of Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Chows, Great Danes, Presa Canarios, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, and Wolf-hybrids. Today, some animal rights movements have launched legislation banning specific breeds from residing within city limits. Several rental agencies and property owners forbid certain breeds from residing on their properties. Not only does the ban cover house pets, but service animals as well. Insurance companies will not offer rental or homeowner coverage if certain dog breeds live in the dwelling. These counties, cities, or states have a right to either not allow the animal into the state, city, or county. The newest hated breed the “Pit-bull” was once the image of the All American Dog. In fact, the pit bull was also a favorite dog among politicians, scholars, and celebrities. Helen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, and the "Our Gang" Little Rascals all had pit bulls.
The “specialists” of animal control can still take a canine with “Pit-bull” characteristics and either taken into custody or maybe just automatically euthanized without any due process. The Pit-bull characteristic is any pure breed or mixed breed that has the structure, a thick skull, whipping tail. Any number of things can happen in this scenario depending on the wording of this law. This leads to the economics of these laws, but not limited to; a veterinarian to do DNA to prove the breed, the owner may need to also find a good lawyer to fight the case, the fines and the court costs all of these can run into thousands of dollars. All this may not even help. Breed discrimination is not about the data on a dog’s disposition, it is not even a logical reasoning, but more of an emotionally charged action. This is about not wanting to face one’s hate, fear, or lack of better wordage ignorance of animals. For the government it just means good economics, to support this prejudice and ignorance. Now for the Pit-bull, whose new name is My Tyson that is his official name or Tyson for short. When he arrived to his new home he was T.J., the rescue before his forever home kept him outside all day and night. The puppy had no idea what a loving home was nor did he have a clue on how to be a “pet”. He was apprehensive and showed signs of fear aggression, when he was near other male dogs. It did not matter if it was large or small breeds and so he was kept separated from all male dogs. He would chase after cats and if he caught them, he would either hold the cats in his mouth; like prey or throw the cat into the air.
Now, Tyson, has his own cat named, Sammy, that he adores and protects.
The other cat, Killer, he avoids except to sniff her. He calms our other female dog, Pink, during her rough patches during thunderstorms and fireworks. He will now play with female and smaller male dogs, especially puppies. He has turned into a wonderful pet. If anyone else had adopted him, for so many reasons that were beyond his control, he would have deemed aggressive and euthanized If Tyson were to be a young, human male, everyone would be trying to find a way to rehabilitate him, so he could enter and be a productive member of society. That is why more education for not only owners but also non-owners, which would like to learn about dog breeds, have training should be in motion instead of Breed Discrimination. In fact, “If you want to adopt a dog or cat go to classes to learn to take care and love this animal as part of your home and family.” Instead of just signing paperwork and pay a
fee.
