“It is estimated that around 55 to 65 percent of all male babies born in the United States are circumcised each year” (KidsHealth, 2016). Circumcision is a surgical procedure that removes the foreskin from the penis. It is one of the oldest and most common surgical procedures among pediatric patients worldwide. The safest time to preform circumcision is soon after birth. In a healthy newborn baby boy this procedure is most frequently done in the first few days of life. For premature babies or other medically compromised babies, this procedure is often done right before they are allowed to go home. The procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes when complications are minimal. This topic is a controversial subject based on the risk and benefits for this procedure. Parents who decided to go with the procedure may do it because all of the male relatives including the father of the child are circumcised, and they don’t want their child to be different in that regard. They also believe that genital hygiene is easier to maintain when circumcised, and it can reduce the risks of infection. Parents who are against circumcision believe that boys should be properly taught how to clean their genetilia. Once the child learns it would remain easy for him to maintain proper hygiene for the rest of his life and can therefore decrease the risk of obtaining infections.
