Persuasive Essay On Civil Rights
Imagine that you are not allowed to marry the love of your life because it’s illegal. Well that is how it is for many citizens of the United States wanting to marry someone of the same sex. I believe that it is a person’s right to choose who they marry even if it is of the same sex. I think it is essential to the growth of the community to have same sex marriage made legal. Same sex marriage is a civil right. The NAACP, on May, 2012, named same sex marriage as “one of the key civil rights struggles of our time.” Without this civil right we will be taking a large step backwards in the race to equality. If the group that was there for the largest civil rights movement in history is saying same sex marriage is a civil right than I would believe …show more content…
Adoption agencies make it very difficult for same sex couples to adopt children. If same sex marriage is made legal these agencies will be required by law to provide equal adoption process for every couple wanting to adopt. There are thousands of children in foster homes that just want a family that will love them and care for them. They don’t care if their parents are of the same sex. Also on a side note legalizing same sex marriage will help reduce the bullying some of these kids, with same sex parents, face because if it is accepted by law more kids will start to accept that this is reality and let it go. There are 397,122 children that are living in foster care. 101,666 of these children are eligible for adoption. There are over 390,000 legal same sex marriages in the United States. Even if only a quarter of these couples decide to adopt a child it could nearly put all of the eligible children into a permanent home. By legalizing same sex marriage in the United States it could dramatically reduce the number of children in foster care. Some might argue that marriage is for procreation and since same sex couples can not physically create a child they should not be allowed to marry. However in most cases the same sex couple will want to adopt a child that the different sex couples did not want. Some different sex couples cannot or do not want children therefore they are not

My personal views on this issue changed a few years ago when watching the TV broadcast and something came up about the right for gays to marry. Previously I was personally indifferent but felt that marriage was as much a religious institution as a civil institution. After all, most marriages are performed by clergy and the majority are in religious settings. I felt that civil union met the needs of gays so why offend the religions? Then I saw an older woman interviewed and she had explained that she and her partner had been waiting 30 or 40 year for this day. They have lived together as a family and wanted to be married. That's about as successful as a married couple can be, still wanting to be married after all that time! And I thought, all Americans are entitled to their own pursuit of happiness. Gays who buy into a system of family values should have the same family rights as others. I also used to get grossed out when I hear same sex marriage, but then I look at Ellen DeGeneres, for example, she is the sweetest the person that could be. Opinions about same sex marriage crossed out so many times and places as well as thru out the years. Many say that time is changing and over the years people slowly will accept the gay marriage.…

Those are marriages are strictly between a man and a woman and marriage is a privilege, not a right. In bible it is often quotes that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. So in the case of Baker v. Nelson, the Supreme Court of Minnesota found that “the institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within an family is as old as the book of Genesis” (Gay Marriage - ProCon.org). So two couple of the same sex getting married is contradictory to that belief. Many Christian believers believe that it is morally wrong to allow same-sex marriage. These can be attributed to religious texts. Oppose group of marriage equality believe that marriage is a privilege and not a right. The classes that are protect under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 include “(1) a history of longstanding, widespread discrimination, (2) economic disadvantage, and (3) immutable characteristics… ‘Sexual Orientation’ does not meet any of the three objective criteria shared by the historically protected civil rights categories” (Gay Mariage – ProCon.org). Same-sex marriage contradicts nature. Two people of the same sex will never be able to marry because it is biologically…

Gay marriage is not an act that will corrupt the nation, its a private and intimate thing. Looking back, I think we will find ourselves to appear ignorant protesting homosexual marriage because that is how a majority of us view the people protesting interracial couples in the past. Although, it may not be viewed as “traditional”, there is a major controversy over what traditional marriage is to begin with, so really, the comparison would not make sense nor be relevant. Lastly, people claim to worry about the children of the future and what kind of home-life they would have if they were to grow up with two same-sex parents, but you can not tell two people they can not be with one another and raise a family because it might be unstable. 400,000 children are in foster care just in a year (“Children”). Foster care is what an unstable environment…

I completely support marriage equality, and I think gay marriage should be legalized because it is uncivilized and unmerited. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which homosexual people are not allowed to chase. They cannot be married to the person they love and it violates their freedoms. Actually, a lot of state of America and some countries support same-sex marriage. Yesterday, gay marriage is allowed in California. This is not only the good news for people live in California but also gives gay people around the world hope and believe that their love would be supported and respected.…

The definition of marriage is the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (Merriam-Webster). This dignified act is under constant threat by lesbian and gay couples protesting for equal rights in marriage. Same sex marriage should be prohibited in the United States because the act will evoke multitudes of problems that will be impossible to manage. The plentiful list of arguments against same sex marriage outweighs its opposite in all areas. For example, the case is commonly viewed as that if the couple is in love, they should be allowed to marry. Love is not the only deciding factor people analyze on why to get married. A few other reasons would be people rationalize that they want children, their family’s opinions of their lover, religious reasons and marriage tax breaks.…

I don’t believe that opposite-sex and same-sex relationships are the same, but I do believe, with growing numbers of Americans, that the time for denigrating or stigmatizing same-sex relationships is over. Whatever one’s definition of marriage, legally recognizing gay and lesbian couples and their children is a victory for basic fairness. Legalizing same sex marriage would make the U.S. a better country. Same sex marriage would show that America does give the rights to the men and women who live in this country, to marry someone of the same gender, to stand up for what people believe in, and to create a better economy. The president of the United States, Barack Obama, explained that the gay couples he has met that are raising children as their own have created normal, caring families and his beliefs are that gay couples should get married and shouldn’t feel pained because they feel less of a citizen because they can’t marry the person they love.…
