Gattaca
The movie Gattaca displays a world that is focused on perfection. Vincent lives in a world where being perfect means everything. He is discriminated against because he was born the natural way and not the “valid” way. The “valid” way is being created in a biotechnology lab. The genetic code of a person is altered, and they are created to be perfect specimens of society. Vincent’s parents trusted in God with his birth, an act that was considered abnormal in this futuristic film. Jerome and Anton both have the perfect genetic code. This was a valiant attempt to prevent his identity from being revealed. This act conveys to the audience that the characters in the movie wanted Vincent to prevail; therefore they were against the genetic segregation. Anton is the detective in the movie and Vincent’s brother that is working the murder case. He discovers that Jerome Morrow is actually his brother that was supposed to be dead. To avoid being arrested Vincent has to prove to Anton that he is a “valid” in every way that matters. They play one final game of chicken. Once again Vincent beats the odds imposed upon him by society and ends up saving his brother’s life again. Anton asks “How are you doing this Vincent”? How have you done any of this?” “We have to go back”. Vincent replies, “You wanna know how I did it”? “This is how I did it Anton; I never saved anything for the swim back”. His brother defying his duty as an officer of the law and allows his brother to continue his mission. Vincent proves his worth and that his genetic makeup has become irrelevant. Discrimination occurred throughout the movie. Vincent should have been admitted to Gattaca on the basis of his knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm. Evidence by the conversation that Vincent had with the Director Josef, “You keep your work station so clean Jerome”. Vincent replies, “It’s next to godliness isn’t that what they say”. The director replies, “Godliness, I reviewed your flight plan. not one error in a million keystrokes. Phenomenal, it’s right that someone like you is taking us to Titan”. At that moment you realize that Vincent has all the skills to be a computer programmer, just not the right genetic code. The real Jerome was not only paralyzed by his accident, but by his lack of ambition. Jerome gave Vincent his identity and Vincent gave him his dream. Another example is the day
