Elizabeth and William Darcy are a young, working couple living in their 1100 square foot condo. They work ten hour days, four days a week and in their down time, enjoy travelling the city via public transit. The couple are looking to get a dog, and Elizabeth wants to adopt her favourite breed, the German Shepherd. Due to the couple’s busy lifestyle, adopting this breed of dog may not be a suitable choice. The German Shepherd may not be an ideal pet for this couple due to its exercise and enrichment requirements and the challenge of travelling with this breed using public transit, but there are alternative breeds that would better adapt to their lifestyle.

In other cases, pets are allowed on transit during off peak hours, must be within a smaller size range, or must be transported in a crate. This may result in the Darcy’s often leaving the German Shepherd at home. German Shepherds are also a loyal and protective breed, and in the cases they board transit, there is a risk they may react unfavourably if a stranger were to walk or sit too close to their owner. The couple may also find it difficult to transport their dog to a veterinarian’s office with restricted transit access, and if the city they reside in happens to not allow large dogs on public transit, that could pose a serious
